Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus vie for attention at MTV's Video Music Awards

Lady Gaga, Miley Cyrus vie for attention at MTV's Video Music Awards | Fox News

NEW YORK – Miley Cyrus made Lady Gaga look surprisingly tame as the pop stars opened the MTV Video Music Awards.

Gaga changed costumes four times Sunday night during her first return to the stage since hip surgery as she performed her new single "Applause." It was a predictably unpredictable appearance for Gaga, who seemed to pump in boos over the sound system as she opened the song in a white nun's habit and square headdress. By the time she finished the song, she was surrounded by unitard-clad male dancers and wearing a long blonde wig and a thong bikini decorated in shells.

But it was Cyrus who stole the show. She immediately kicked things up well beyond provocative, appearing on stage with a multitude of dancing teddy bears in a bodysuit adorned with a cartoon character. She twerked, changed into a flesh-colored bikini, ran a fan's foam finger along her privates as Robin Thicke appeared on stage to perform "Blurred Lines," then gave the singer a lap dance. The wild child also slapped a girl's butt onstage.

"Miley better go get a pregnancy test after all that grinding," Kevin Hart joked afterward.

I watched just a few mins of it before I literally had to go throw up in the bathroom. What happened to MTV? What a sickening and horrible display especially to all of the young impressionable people watching. I remember back in the day when "musical acts" regardless of their looks had the musical knowledge and chops to back up all the flash and bang. Now its all flash/bang with no to little substance.
Everytime I see something like this im convinced we are de-volving.
    Belch.........

Maybe when they warned us about Elvis they were onto something.

    Pretty disgusting performance.

What a great role model for young women.

She's 20. Have you ever seen 21 year-old ladies at the club? Not much different. People are talking about her, and that's the whole point of performing at an event like the VMA's -- creating publicity and relevance. I don't think Cyrus has ever said, "I want to be a role model for young women."

But seriously, you "literally" had to go throw up? I doubt that.

The VMA's have a history of provocative performances (Prince's assless chaps, Madonna's "Like a Virgin," etc.). Why would this year be any different? Don't get me wrong, her performance wasn't my cuppa tea, but I'm not offended by it. I chose to watch it. I didn't have to, and neither did anyone else, except for the people in the live audience at the show.

The 20 year old girls I know are disgusted by her performance. What I am concerned about are the 10-15 year old girls who look up to her. And not just her, there's plenty of others.

Prediction - Miley Cyrus will be dead within 5 years. She will sadly join a long list of rich and famous child stars who had no one to help guide them into responsible adulthood.

I don't know any 10-15 year olds who look up to her. Most of my students were shocked by her performance, and not in a good way.

Also, don't you all think it was likely that the producers at MTV were telling her to ham it up, to bump her performance to make it even more...well, whatever it was? It's about selling music, creating relevance and getting ratings. She probably doesn't care if she's a role model -- she's making a ton of money.

The song that she sang, "We won't stop," is an anthem about basically doing whatever you want without worrying about others judging you, being yourself, loving who you want. Pretty sure that's what her performance was -- Cyrus doing whatever it is that she does.

I love the brief shot of the audience in the Lady Gagger parody . . .
    It's dead-on.

I stopped watching MTV when they stopped showing sensible, down-to-earth, good-taste, videos like this . . .

. . . so I had no desire to watch the awards show under discussion.

Doesn't Tom Petty look even more like Bradley Manning in drag than Joni Mitchell does?
    It's eerie.

How many of you actually watched the VMA? I didn't but I watched a replay of her performance and wasn't shocked or didn't literally have to go throw up in the bathroom. If that's the case then Dirty Dancing probably gave you ulcers. It was a performance to get everybody's attention, get her name in the news for a while and to make old folks gasp... it worked.

I am happy to say I didn't watch it. MTV could drop of the Earth and I wouldn't know it for 2 weeks. What I can't figure out is why do you have degrade yourself to get in the news. Why not get in the news and generate attention by doing something positive? I guess in the end, you have to use the tools you were given and if this is all she has to work with, it will be a short ride.

The outrage is kind of hilarious. They are asking "why". LOL, she did it because people are predictable and she got attention to remain relevant. Network (free) tv has all kinds of sex scenes and violence. Heck "24" had torture scenes including waterboarding.

Do people really think these things are spontaneous?

This show is a very extensive production. Hours and hours of rehearsal and writing is done for the performances and it is all part of the plan. It's weird to me how people are reacting to the performance, buying into exactly what the producers wanted. Talking about the VMAs, and getting people to search for it on the internet. The era of hashtag marketing is extremely easy when everyone and their grandma is talking about the same thing.

To the OP, do you know what the term literally means?

It was crude, classless and vulgar. Gasp....no. Disgusted yes. There are always people willing to do all kinds of things for money. Just sad that so many let their children view this behavior and see nothing wrong with it or with Miley being an idol to these kids.

did you see this guy's performance last night? it was such a vulgar display that it had to be filmed from the waist up. what a sickening and shameful thing to broadcast, especially for the impressionable children who were watching. i literally had to throw up. twice. i remember back in the day when truly great artists relied on their talent. sadly, this generation seems to only value flash with little substance... -M
