With the changing trends on how local viewership content is changing and the affiliate model versus direct to consumer streaming, it is also hard to predict the future worth of these over the air signals. Do KWTV or KOTV get any cut of an OKC or Tulsa IP address streaming Paramount Plus (CBS Programming)?
In 1975, these signals were much more valuable as they were just a half dozen signals you could get with your TV in OKC/Tulsa with rabbit ears. Griffin had exclusivity of CBS programming in Tulsa and OKC.
In 2025, you can get this content in so many more ways that have become common in culture from the smart phone to your Fire Stick, Roku, or Apple TV through an app.
In 2025, you can also create content as an individual that can rival that of the local affiliate. There are plenty of storm chasers and off-air meteorologist that have access to similar radars and data that live stream to decent audiences on Facebook and YouTube.

Re: KWTV News 9 on a decline.
A friend in the know said Jordan Ryan will be on KOCO in the mornings doing field reporting with Audrey Goodson.

But seriously, no way they could provide the local storm coverage this area needs during severe weather. Hope it doesn't come to that.
Yeah, I'm sure they won't. Its the weather technology infrastructure where they are probably seeing the most cost savings.
I guessing the weather channel studio will just have broadcast meteorologists recording segment after segment for local stations like a production line. For the 'boring' weather markets this works just fine.

I'm sure Allen media has been paying attention to the rise of weather channels on Youtube like Ryan Hall Y'all and others.
I bet these Allen media stations are going to be talking about weather events not happening in their region so they can 'spice up the weather' segment.

Re: KWTV News 9 on a decline.
Allen media Group reversed the local weather team layoff plans following intense viewer complaints (and probably more importantly) advertisers demanding reduced rates on local newscasts.

That's a win in my book.
Hope they realize the investment viewers make in their on-air staff and the desire to have LOCAL news, weather, and sports.

Good. That morning "news" show is still unwatchable but its a step in the right direction.

Re: KWTV News 9 on a decline.
So, this is a weird one, but this is the only place I know to post it.
Back in May of 2023, I went to Orlando with my family. We flew SW from OKC with a connection in Austin going there and coming back. On our way home, I noticed the skyline of OKC at the gate seemed off. See below:
Attachment 19493
It had to have been take prior to 4/19/1995 due one of the buildings there that is no longer standing.
I tweeted the Austin airport about it tagging Mayor Holt in the tweet as I thought it was odd. It got some traction, Austin issued an apology for not having an updated pic and showing a building that was destroyed by a terrorist attack. I thought that was it and went on about my day...
Attachment 19494
Fast forward to yesterday, I am scrolling through facebook and this story pops up.
https://www.news9.com/story/67ae2586...s-destinations
I thought the pic looked familiar but had to go back and look. Sure enough, they used the pic that I tweeted back in May of 2023 for an airport story. An outdated photo, at that.
I am not complaining, I am not looking for anything. I don't care about photo credit, I just thought it was strange that they used a year and a half old photo for an article about the airport when there are so many stock photos out there to be used. Better ones, at that...

I'm old and lived here my whole life. The picture looks pretty cool with the blue cast. I couldn't identify any building in OKC from that pic, and not bothered by it.

I’m a little surprised if your old and lived here your whole life that you don’t recognize the Murrah building.
-
Re: KWTV News 9 on a decline.
I can recognize Devon, Kerr-McGee, Liberty Bank, First National, and 707 N. Robinson (since my dad worked there with SW Bell before they moved to Central High School). The rest are just buildings, some tall, some taller.

If you have not figured it out already, many people are not very detail oriented. It is how we have found ourselves in the mess we have created for ourselves as Americans.

Re: KWTV News 9 on a decline.
My comment claiming ignorance is an exaggeration. As I think about it more, I realize that the point I am trying to make is that most images created for this type of usage are becoming AI generated and modified so that they show a close representation of the skyline. But, specific identifiers, such as names, logos, trademarks, etc. are removed or modified. In order to reduce claims of image ownership, free advertising, and an image becoming dated as an historical snapshot.
I think everyone's internet feed has almost daily stories titled "Best Places to Live", work, vacation, etc. that have some slide of a skyline at the top. And they all seem to have a couple fairly recognizable images of some landmark, and a lot of generic, and not to scale, or geography, image fillers that have a color composition that also enhances a generic overall feel. I think the Southwest image shown fits that to a "T".

I have noticed more social media posts purposely containing old or altered images, bad grammar, wrong identification of individuals, etc to purposely solicit engagements, clicks, likes. In other words, any comment, even a negative one, helps a story get views.
I don't think that was the case here, more than likely just a pulled image from News 9's online image database from a previous story that was tagged with OKC Airport or similar.

Re: KWTV News 9 on a decline.
I have lived in OKC since 1960 at 5 years old and before the bombing I had never even heard of the Murrah Building. Pretty much before that and before Bricktown became a thing there was never an interest to go downtown my entire adult life except if I was called for jury duty. And I dreaded having to do that. I have no recollection of what that building looked like other than the images of it after the bombing. Downtown back then was not like downtown now wanting to go there and do things. At least for me.

Re: KWTV News 9 on a decline.
In regards to SB 158. (The storm chasing bill) There are reports that Griffin media is lobbying for this bill to pass. If this is the truth. This should be the most concerning thing Griffin media has ever done. Most people in Congress / Senate don't know anything about storm chasing. Even if it involves Storm chasers having emergency lights. This could pave the way in the future to where this is abused
-
Re: KWTV News 9 on a decline.
It was kind of odd that most of the KWTV storm chasers pretty much immediately started defending the bill about a day or two after it was announced on social media saying it's not what everyone thinks it is.

Definitely. There was no mention of it on Michael Armstrong the top storm chaser on KOCO and Mike Morgan of KFOR called it out for it's ridiculousness. KWTV chasers are the only ones that have defended the bill. Which even though there is no physical proof of them lobbying. That is a giveaway telltale sign that they are

Maybe he realizes that TV is still a game for the young and pretty? As always, personalities are involved. People that get along well with others and age gracefully usually get a lot of love on the way out.

Exactly, I think Dean is retiring at just the right time for his career. Guessing it's his choice, and not management, as a clear successor has been named already.
I think this was the final major storm event for Gary from 2013?

Re: KWTV News 9 on a decline.
I have always liked Dean as he seemed to have a good rapport with coaches and players all over the place. I saw him at Clark crew a few weeks ago and he wasn't looking great. I hope his health is fine and this was a planned step away from TV.

Re: KWTV News 9 on a decline.
The News On 6 family is sending off Meteorologist Megan Gold as she heads to Oklahoma City to join the News 9 weather team, staying with Griffin Media.
