Thread: new building across from Academy?

Default new building across from Academy?

Does anyone know what business is building the orange colored building across from Academy on Broadway north of 33rd? I've been watching it a few weeks but haven't noticed any signs out front. It now appears like it may be a restaurant more than anything else. Anyone??

Popeyes! There was an interesting debate a few months ago when the site plan was presented to Council. The Mayor went on for a good 10 minutes about the difference between "yellow" and "maize". Now you call it "orange"!!!

Would that be the same mayor who sold the city a bill of goods about the "Yes-Yes-No-No" fiasco while not revealing her own conflict of interest?

Yup. Same one that put the ridiculous frog statue outside the City Administration bld.

I like the frog. Big, fat, with a crown on its head--the perfect symbol for government.

Actually, I like all the statues. I don't think a community ever goes wrong when they invest in efforts to beautify--whether with art, landscaping, or whatever.

On the other hand, rubber stamping every strip mall development and prefab concrete monstrosity rarely inhances a community's quality of life.

I think the key word is beautify... some of those statues are just plain odd.

Nothing can be worse than the tacky fiberglass buffalo spread across downtown OKC.

PU, what conflict of interest did good ole Saundra Naifeh have? I'm not an Edmonite so I didn't hear. I am familiar with the Yes Yes No No campaign though.

I didn't hear about this conflict of interest either.

Popeyes in Edmond nears opening day

    By Tricia Pemberton

EDMOND — Popeyes Chicken & Biscuits at Burton and Broadway in Edmond is about a month away from completion if the weather cooperates.
Ice and snow in January and rain in March have slowed the project a bit, said Michael Almaraz, leasing agent with Grubb & Ellis-Levy Beffort.

The building is actually two spaces combined. Popeyes is about 2,200 square feet. An additional 1,800-square-foot space will be leased to a separate tenant, yet to be named, Almaraz said.

Construction on both should be complete by May 1.

This is the first entrance into Edmond for Popeyes, a 35-year-old Atlanta-based chain that has 1,800 restaurants nationwide and in 27 other countries.

The company's Web site shows 16 Popeyes locations in Oklahoma, eight of them in the metro area.

The Popeyes menu is inspired by recipes from Louisiana, with fried chicken and Cajun red beans and rice and other over-rice dishes.

Popeyes also has a partnership with America's Second Harvest — the Nation's Food Bank Network, giving $265,000 to the organization in 2006.

The Edmond franchise is owned by Pop Holdings LLC of Dallas.

The new building last month was painted yellow to match restaurants nationwide, despite an earlier objection to the color by Edmond Mayor Saundra Naifeh and Councilwoman Paula Sanford. The two complained about the color in an August city council meeting, but the building was approved unanimously by the council as it was submitted.

The building also will have red trim and green balconies. In a nod to the council, the building exterior will have brick 3 feet from the ground on all sides, and will have a masonry wall and landscaping on the southeast corner to block noise from an adjacent neighborhood.

That place is so expensive for what you get... Glad they did something with that empty lot.

I wonder what the other tenant will be. Perhaps the Chipotle that Edmond is promised?

  16. Default Re: new building across from Academy?

    Hopefully. I'm dying for Chipotle.

I've never noticed that Popeye's is any more expensive than KFC.

jbrown, even if its not where Chipotle is going, they have officially announced a store for Edmond, so it's only a matter of time and location now.

The closer to 2nd and Coltrane, the better.

Woo hoo! It's at 15th and Broadway, about as centralized as you can get in Edmond. Of course, there are several other Mexican or Tex/Mex restaurants within walking distance of this, but what they hey!

On a more direct reply to this thread... have any of you EATEN at the new Popeye's yet? I love Popeye's, but I've heard terrible things about the service and staff at this location.

Chipotle is not like other mexican restaurants. It's comparable to Moe's or Qdoba, but much better.

And it has a massive built in following, so it will be packed come Jan. 18th!!!
