The OKC Phil Nutcracker is going to be a pretty great performance, but if the ticket prices are a little north of what you want to pay to bring kids to a show you may not be able to stay the length of, there are a couple of options. The Edmond ballet is performing in MWC at Rose State with a much more affordable price. The music is canned, but the performance will be great.

If you're on the west side of town, this coming weekend Saturday and Sunday, the Central OK Ballet Company is doing a Nutcracker performance with live music performed by the Oklahoma Community Orchestra. Tickets are $25.

I'll be in the pit on that one. All I hear from the performance is a bunch of dancers banging around on the stage above me, but I hear it's a pretty good show.

Fun facts coming...

It's an interesting ballet on a lot of levels. Many ballet companies rely on their nutcracker production to pay for all of the rest of the season's productions. It's by far the most profitable thing they perform and that's why they have so many showings of it.

It's also interesting from a cultural standpoint as if you'll watch Act II where they basically represent various cultures in the way imperial Russia would have seen them in the 19th century, a lot of that has become very controversial, i.e., the "Tea" number where the dancers are not always depicted by Chinese dancers but dress in Chinese looking costumes, the Coffee number where the dancers are supposed to represent the conservative middle east, but dress in hardly anything at all in many productions. There have been protests and attempts at less offensive costuming and choreography. But yes, this 19th century Russian ballet has been somewhat caught up in a low key cultural appropriation debate for awhile--not that ballet companies are going to probably ever refuse to perform it. See the earlier fun fact.

Also, if you'll listen closely to the overture, I can tell you that a chunk of that was part of the audition repertoire for the OKC phil violin section last I looked. It's tough stuff.
