This is an attempt to avoid a cyber squatting issue down the road, should the situation arise. Cases like that would draw out and it can get ugly as the team would fight to get the domain from anyone who would buy it - just because.

No different then most companies buy every version of their domain and popular misspellings. All to protect their trademark.

I agree with venture79, why not buy every possible domain combination, to avoid a fight later on. I mean you can get domains for less than $10/yr why not spend $300 on 30 or so combinations. I mean $300 to the NBA, has gotta be like what? (insert your preferred amount here)
