An interesting interview with Dave Osborn, who is the manager of the new downtown location,

I somehow missed that this location opened weeks ago. I walked by it yesterday and looked in the window. It looks like an amazingly beautiful place. Has anyone eaten there yet? I have never been to the other location and was wondering if they have anything a vegetarian could eat.
They have lots of salads and vegetables. And if you're pescatarian, then Mahogany has some of the best seafood in the metro. If you call ahead and tell them you're vegetarian, they would likely be willing to prepare something specifically for you (just don't do that on Valentine's or New Years Eve).
My mom ate here a couple days ago with a friend and texted me that she had the best steak of her life. I've never been, but I can see why this place is so popular.
It is excellent. Both times I've gone there was a in house dry aged special cut. Service was better the second time. They essentially have to clone the staff from the memorial location and it was rocky the first week. But the food is excellent and it is beautiful inside. Between this and chophouse 10 I would be worried for red prime. One thing I've noticed while going to the new prime house locations is that the lighting is well engineered and people look good under it. And while the food at red is always great, my date pointed out that we look like blotchy trolls in the "red wind." Rand's quote, not mine.
I always loved driving by Red Prime and seeing the "Red Wind", but when I finally made it into the restaurant, I was really surprised to see that all of the lighting in the restaurant is red. In a place that is so apt for picture taking, why would you choose to have such intense unnatural light everywhere? The food was stellar, but they really should have kept the red at the entrance and maybe the bar area.
Then they'd have to change their name to "Mostly Red" :-P
Honestly I like it. Rand is fairly obsessed with lighting for mood AND a major proponent of a neon-heavy approach to all of Automobile Alley owing to the district's history, which explains this particular design. But the color red is also generally considered to be very important psychologically in restaurant marketing and interiors as it tends to make people feel hungry and creates a feeling of warmth and sociability. This is why you see red featured prominently in nearly every logo for national restaurant chains, and in their interior spaces. Considerable research has gone into this. Rand just took it to the next level with Red Prime.
I'm just the opposite... Only reason I would go back to Red Prime is to try the fried chicken. My two steak experiences there pale in comparison to the steaks I get at Mahogany..... I have not made it to Broadway 10 yet so can't compare.
I will say it all comes down to how the steak is served at the table. I like that Mahogany serves their steaks on a scalding hot plate and the steak is still hot while the steaks I was served at Red Prime had cooled down after it had rested.... I'm not a fan of the resting steaks myth.
I'm with PhiAlpha. Much better experiences at Red Prime (or Mickey Mantle's) than Mahogany, where I have never been impressed. Count me in on a 40 day dry-aged rib eye with coffee crust and red sauce at Red Prime or a roquefort filet at Mickey's. The bar and interior at Mahogany are fantastic though; I expect to spend some time there for sure.
Ahhh... There is the diffyerence.... You guys like your steaks with crusts and sauces.... And I like mine with a knife and a fork and even the knife is optional..... I can totally appreciate why you would prefer Red Prime.... The crusts and other acoutrements just don't appeal to me.
