I came across this article about a NJ man that had a huge survivor office pool busted. How running an $837,000 office pool destroyed this man's life | NJ.com

It's crazy to me because I've been a part of Big XII survivor pools in my office before and had no clue they were illegal. Currently in a March Madness pool.

I don't really understand why this type of 'betting' is illegal.

office pools are the gateway drug leading to out of control gambling and family ruin. So they are illegal in order to protect the children (a reason that trumps all manner of logic in oh so many minds.)

I use to set up the little football pool numbers where you bought a $5.00 per square and it paid out by the quarter scores of college football teams; nothing of that magnitude.
