Thread: Seafood in OKC

  1. #1

    Default Seafood in OKC

Let me be the third on this thread to say I can't wait to get a Bonefish Grill in OKC, and if it doesn't end up in Chisholm Creek close to where I live (selfish, I know), I would love to see it downtown in Century Center as well... perhaps even one in both locations! #bangbangshrimprocks

Has there been any indication that Bonefish Grill is looking at OKC?

Back in 2008 they planned an OKC and a Tulsa location, but they cancelled the OKC location after the economy crashed and chose to go Tulsa only. I haven't heard anything stating they are looking at the market again other than people requesting it on the Chisolm Creek facebook page.

Personally, I don't care if it's a "win" for OKC, I would just prefer not to have to drive to Tulsa to get my Bang Bang Shrimp fix, that's all.

It is a "win" being that OKC doesn't have anywhere for fresh seafood other than Red Lobster. I was really looking forward to the seafood place opening in The Rise but being that its moving Aloft pace, who knows when it will be open.

    Wrong.

VAST has it flown in daily from Boston.

From a 2012 article in the Gazette -

The menu is touted as “globally inspired American cuisine.” Williams said diners can expect American fare like steaks and seafood, with the seafood flown in daily from Foley Fish in Boston.

Really? Pearl's and its cousins don't have fresh seafood? Ludivine or Red or the other steakhouses/semi-upscale dining places don't have fresh seafood? I would've thought someone else (*anybody* else) in OKC besides Red Lobster would have fresh seafood... I generally don't eat much seafood out here, so I honestly don't know, but that'd just be strange if Red Lobster were the only ones (besides Vast, as Bellaboo said)...

Mickey Mantle's flies their seafood in daily too:

Grilled Redfish with Jumbo Lump Crab Haricot Verts and Beurre Blanc

Pan Roasted Sea Bass Lobster Risotto

Cedar Plank Salmon Sauce Beurre Blanc

Pan Seared Ahi Tuna Black Sesame Crusted Sashimi Grade Tuna with a Ponzu Sautéed Vegetable Stir Fry

Shrimp Scampi and Jumbo Lump Crab Angel Hair Pasta

    Australian Cold Water Lobster Tail

    Alaskan King Crab Legs

Surf and Turf Blue Ribbon Filet Mignon and Australian Lobster Tail

King and Turf Blue Ribbon Filet Mignon and Alaskan King Crab Legs

I think what bchris02 was saying is that there aren't any 'seafood' restaurants except Red Lobster. All of the places listed so far (except Pearls) are steakhouses that happen to also serve seafood (and usually as a complement to the steak). Here is Jax we have lots of restaurants which serve seafood that have nary a piece of beef on the menu - unless it is a burger. Not saying it is right or wrong, but Oklahoma IS beef country.

  9. Default Re: Century Center

No, I totally get it and agree. We have a major hole in our food scene here owing to our location. Fresh seafood definitely needs better representation.

I don't think location is entirely the reason being that other landlocked cities don't seem to have the lack of options OKC does. However, the situation should be changing pretty soon, if none other than the opening of the Drake in the Rise.

  11. Default Re: Century Center

Of course it is location. Location doesn't just impact availability, it forms the culture of a place. We are at the intersection of "far from the ocean" and "beef country."

  12. Default Re: Century Center

Pelicans....and it's locally owned, so it's even better. Granted there are only two locations, but I've never been disappointed there. It's not "fine dining", but it's a better bang for your buck than Bonefish.

I ate at a Bonefish in Mobile, AL. It was ok and all, but I wouldn't claim it to be just so freaking wonderful. It was sort of the run of the mill seafood joint to me. They try to fancy some things up a bit and all, but I don't care about fancy, I want the flavor. Bonefish was just average....but priced higher.

You wont find it outside of the Pearls family, but some of the best seafood comes from places that can dump the crab boil out on a trashcan lid....seriously.

Oh and being landlocked doesn't actually mean much. If you ask seafood places on the shore where they get their stuff....honestly, it's mostly frozen from a distributer. It's not a secret or anything because they all do it, so don't ever be afraid to ask. The bigger and busier the place is, the less likely someone went out on a boat out back and dropped a line for it. For eateries, it's not consistent enough, which is why they do the frozen thing. The more "chain" they are ...ie Bonefish, the more you can be assured that it's frozen as well.

I don't care for it but a lot of people here like Joe's Crab Shack, but there is only one location in Oklahoma and it is in Tulsa.

Here are the top 10 seafood chains in the US

Restaurant Chain Number of Outlets Est. Sales ($Million)
Red Lobster (Darden Rest. Group) 680 $2,400
    Landry’s/Joe’s Crab Shack/Chart House 300+ $1,168.0
Long John Silvers (Yum Brands) 1,200 $800.0
    Captain D’s Seafood 560 $506
    McCormick & Schmick’s 57 $238
Bonefish Grill (Outback Steakhouse, Inc.) 63 $203.0
    Legal Seafood 30 $150.0(est)
    McGrath's Fish House 17 $68.0
Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. 20 $65.0
    Rockfish Seafood Grill 25 $50.0(est)
    Shells Restaurant 25 $41.6

It looks like it is still a local niche market because #5 on the list only has 57 outlets.

    Speaking of Red Lobster . . .
This dude is an "East Coast Elitist" yet this is still one of the funniest books ever:

btw: There most definitely IS a Joe's Crab Shack in OKC. Last time I ate there it wasn't bad at all.

Only one Pelican's left. The one on the north side closed years ago.

And while I usually choose local over chain..... I can't say I've had the same experience with Pelican's. After my last visit...... Well I'll just say it will be my last visit..... A lot of people do seem to still like it and it is locally owned and I agree that is a good thing.

Joe's Crab Shack is one of the worst restaurants ever conceived. Awful. And the last family outing to Red Lobster will truly be our last. It's always been a chain, but the quality of food there has just continued to slide. There was a dish that was practically inedible. Ugh. Never again.

The one on I-240 served me crab jerky last time I was there..... Not even my wife could cook crab that poorly and she can barely open a can of ravioli without burning it.

Joe's is still there. Arby's and Mazzio's were demolished.
