Firefighters Smash BMW's Windows to Stretch Hose Toward 8-Alarm Blaze

Next time you think about parking in front of a fire hydrant, keep this BMW in mind.

The owner took a gamble, perhaps thinking, "What are the chances they'll actually need to use the hydrant, right?"

Well, Wednesday night, an eight-alarm fire broke out across the street from where the car was parked and the Boston Fire Department did not hesitate to bust through the car windows to weave their hoses from the hydrant straight towards the flames.

Keeping the hose in a straight line helps maintain the water pressure.

The bad parking job triggered an uproar online as many were disgusted at the driver's poor choice to block the fire hydrant.

"Some jackass parked his BMW in front of a fire hydrant in the city of Boston," one person tweeted. "The firefighters showed him how they felt."

Another tweeting, "This is why you MUST NOT park your #BMW in front of a fire hydrant."

I take no joy in their action, but I do appreciate that the Firemen understand priorities so well. B'mer, rustbucket, high end exotic ... none should block a hydrant.

I think this is a "Law Abiding" issue that was not tempered by "Common Sense".
Therefore, I hold the BMW driver in contempt (plus court costs). =)

btw: The difference between BMW Drivers and Porcupines is NOT that, with Porcupines, the pricks are on the outside.

The firefighters didn't really have to bust out his windows just to get to the hydrant. But he shouldn't have parked in front of it either. Good for the firefighters.

Actually, you are right, but it was an eight alarm fire and the firefighters need all the help they can get, the less bending of the hose the better their odds of controlling the fire. Note this part of the original post. The firefighters didn't really have to bust out his windows just to get to the hydrant. But he shouldn't have parked in front of it either. Good for the firefighters.

Of course if the car had been a vw bug, a few of them could gave just carried it off or wedged it been other cars (as a former asst. band director discovered more than once back in the day)

Up until they redid the streets last year, there was a metered parking space east bound on Reno right before Hudson where a fire hydrant sat on the corner. (Basically across from LaLuna and towards the corner) The space was definitely within 5 feet from the hydrant. There were lines painted on the ground to show the parking space also. Got a ticket for parking too close to the hydrant even though I was within the confines of the marked metered space. Took pictures and went to court. City prosecutor wouldn't dismiss but the late great Judge Manger took one look at the pictures and dismissed it telling the city to get its act together.
