Thread: Yukon Sam's and new Wal-Mart Rumor

Default Yukon Sam's and new Wal-Mart Rumor

So I've heard a rumor for a few years that Wal-Mart would build a new Wal-Mart, and turn the old one into a Sam's. With Sam's obviously expanding in the area, I'm hearing this rumor again. Anyone have any information on this? Please don't turn this into an anti Wal-Mart/evil corporation thread.

Now would be the time to do it. If anyone is fuming at the sudden Walmart boom, surely these stores couldn't make it worse. You know what would be cool if they did a two story one. Walmart on bottom and Sam's on the top(not sexually).

My biggest issue with the current Walmart is how they chronically understaffed the checkout lines have been for the last few years, not the building itself. It probably was built 20 to 25 years ago so might be approaching time for a major renovation, I think I remember hearing somewhere that after 30-ish years it is getting past time for commercial buildings to need renovations on things like plumbing and at least some of the fixtures. Plus I had heard that the one in Yukon was one of the earliest SuperCenter stores, so it would not be shocking that it may not fit nicely into what is now their national standard. At least a new Walmart & Sams pair would be less likely to leave the old structure empty like the current one did the original Yukon Walmart. They had promised a sort of clearance odds and ends store would take over the old location but it went out of business quick, like measured in a few months or so but from the first (and maybe last) time I went in there it felt like their was no way the concept was really going to work (it was almost like they just were storing broken and lost things found when cleaning the warehouse and parading that as a store to fulfill a commitment made to the city).

Bud's was the name of the store. It was actually pretty cool, but it did go out quick. It's been Hasting's ever since which has been a pretty good business as a whole for Yukon. The Yukon SuperCenter is one of if not the first SuperCenter. I think El Reno may have been the second. It wasn't a Wal-Mart and Sam's pair, Wal-Mart is supposed to rebuild somewhere, and turn the SuperCenter into a Sam's. I think the building could probably be renovated for a lot less than building a new Sam's. The structure is probably still pretty good.

Was in the Yukon WM the other day and noticed how few OTC drugs they sell in there. Mustangs MN has a much larger selection of them along with many more cosmetic products. Not sure about their strategy..(?)

I have some very good sources within Walmart's new store development and there are no immediate plans for Yukon.

Big Lots is moving to a new location in Yukon however! If that doesnt get you excited, what will....lol.

In my opinion, Target has a pretty good selection of OTC drugs, and I'm not really familiar with Cosmetics. It seems like a pretty big section. Walgreen's has the best selection, but they are way too expensive. I'll only buy from them if it's something no one else has. Sam's has a good cheap selection on things you take everyday, like Zyrtec.

The Yukon Supercenter was opened in time for summer 1993. A renovation of the flooring and a little bit of the floor plan was done in 2012/13. The El Reno Supercenter was built summer/early fall 1995.

The Yukon Wal-mart is run better than the El Reno location. I know of many Yukon Supercenter employees who live in El Reno. The Yukon manager noticed this as well and mentioned to those employees why don't they work at the El Reno store and they could transfer if they wanted. Those employees stated no thanks. They were going to quit rather than work there. The El Reno store has/had a bad manager. They already heard about it and were avoiding working there on purpose.

The old shopping center where Hastings is currently located has had some of the parking lot resurfaced with blacktop. The old lot was bad all over. The north end now has a Planet Fitness in there and their lot is packed most of the day from what I have seen. There is now a ladies fitness location on the very south end. There are only a few empty storefronts now most of which are located on the south end. And the cheap movies theater there does a good business. It seems this area could use a few more things but it is doing great. The exception is the area immediately surrounding the new theater on the south side of I-40. Those store fronts are still empty. Not much is being done with them.

Imo, turning the Wal-Mart into a Sam's would be a mistake. There is a bunch of traffic that the Wal-Mart brings, Sam's...not so much. Retail in this area looks to be doing good. Not many empty storefronts, not any on the Wal-mart side of Garth Brooks. There could be an Applebee's or TGIF built by the Hallmark store and it would do great seeing how a similar Chili's is busy all the time on the other side of the highway. There is not another open lot to build a Supercenter on that side of the highway unless it is way back west off Garth Brooks on Vandament. Taking that Supercenter away would do those business' some measure of harm.
