Have Guardian now; they are excellent. Had ADT; they were excellent. Only switched because the old keypad wore out and ADT wanted a boat-load of cash to put in a new one. Went with Guardian and not only got a new keypad, but also added motion detectors. Can't really go wrong with either one of them. Drove around the neighborhood, then talked to folks we knew who had different companies. Guardian got high marks from people in our neighborhood.
On a side note, if you're going to have a system installed as brand-new, get the smoke detectors & carbon monoxide detectors hard-wired into the system, so if they go off, your security co. will be notified. We don't have that [older house] and wish we did.
Depending on the technology level of your home, you can use remote services as well. You can also get security cameras installed. Just depends on how much you're willing to spend.
As for chimney cleaners, can't offer a suggestion. We've never used our fireplace.
+1 for Wiring Solutions. They are a local OKC company and provide great customer service.
+1 for Guardian. We had ADT for more than 20 years and they were okay but not outstanding. One of my sons went with Guardian and we found we could get exactly the same service we were getting from ADT for about half the cost (ADT's fees kept going up every year) and so we switched. That was several years ago and our cost has remained steady, no annual increase. The service is even better than we were getting from ADT. And Guardian is "local" (actually based in Tulsa, but local to the state; ADT is a subsidiary of Tyco, a multi-national conglomerate, and we were supported out of Denver)...
I don't know what their current policy is, but I bought Allied about fifteen years ago and they haven't changed my price at all. And I have been very happy with their system. I spent the extra bucks for a deluxe system that included 2 smoke and 2 heat detectors. All windows and doors and motion detectors and I can leave my windows open (dual magnets) with the system on (and I do that a lot in the spring and fall).
