What happened to the old Rexall drugstore

What happened to the Rexall drugstore in the sooner shopping center? It had been there for years. They built a new building on the corner of 5th and broadway in front of their old location and was open just a short time and now the building is vacant.

Good question!

My limited understanding is that either just prior to moving or just after moving they sold out to a chain. Apparently that didn't work out so well. That's too bad, another unique Moore business with an old history gone.

According the the businesses in the shopping center when they built that building some how it did a lot of damage to the shopping center behind it. something to do with the new building pushing the parking lot into the old shopping center and messing it up, thats why they had to do some work over by the eye care place. I dont know if rexall had to pay for all of that and they didnt recover after that.

They sold to USA Drug/Super that then built the new store in from of where rexall had been. In September USA Drug was bought out by Walgreens and has closed several stores. I haven't been over in that area to see if that one has closed.

My folks were customers of Rexall for YEARS & friends with some of the employees, so here's what we were told (and experienced first hand as customers/friends). A few years ago Mike, the previous owner, decided he wanted to scale his responsibilities down so he sold to a larger corporation. They remained Moore Rexall, and Mike stayed on as lead pharmacist. They then sold to Med-X and back in the spring Mike left to take a position as a pharmacist at the VA Hospital. The new bldg was built but the monthly cost for the building alone was astronomical, which played a major factor in the decision to close it when Med-X sold out to Walgreens. The pharmacists Chris & Aaron both moved to CVS on 4th & Eastern. One of their techs, whose name escapes me at the moment, moved to Walgreens on 12th & Eastern. Zach (deliveries/tech) was going to pursue another line of work. Chris is planning to open his own small pharmacy in the next few months; it'll be off 119th in the shopping center where Billy Simms BBQ & Papa Murphy's Pizza are. Long time employees Louise & Carrie will be joining him. Oh, and a couple of former employees that left around the same time as Mike are working at Carter's Drug on 4th by Highland East (pharmacist & a tech - again, their names escape me at the moment).

I'm happy to report that the new pharmacy is open as of today! It's called Chris' Express Drug & it's on SW 119th just E of Western. It's next door to the dry cleaners. I had a prescription filled there today. They've got a drive thru, offer free delivery, and they've got a refill app for smartphones that you can scan the barcode on the pill bottles.
