Thread: Oklahoma Unemployment Rate Plummets to 5.4%

Default Oklahoma Unemployment Rate Plummets to 5.4%

Oklahoma recorded the largest drop in the unemployment rate out of all the states, from 6.0% to 5.4%

Fortunately, unlike the modest decline in the national unemployment rate, this does not appear to be largely because of people dropping out of the labor pool. We added 10,000 jobs in March alone and 10,000 fewer Oklahomans were unemployed.

That is a massive monthly gain for us, especially considering we added nearly 10% of all new jobs in the entire country last month.

What I don't know is what caused this. Does anyone know of some major hiring event that occured in our state or is this simply a sign of a growing state economy? 10,000 news jobs is double our February increase and almost triple the previous months' increases.

    Great news for Oklahoma.

Oklahoma registered the largest one-month decline in unemployment in March as the state's jobless rate fell to 5.4 percent, according to figures released Friday.

More good news for Oklahoma and especially for OKC. I can't imagine the rate in OKC going much lower than that.

And this is icing on the cake.

Yet has anyone noticed how jobs are out there (if you are not in the Energy or Health fields). Pickings are meager to say the least. The Oklahoman Classifieds section could almost be a flier if it wasn't for the car ads. Even online, jobs are thin. As someone that was recently unemployed for 4 months, there were weeks were it was difficult to even come up with the minimum 2 contacts a week to maintain unemployment. Now that it has dropped even farther, the auto email I get from the online sites have been even less. If I was still looking, I wouldn't have been able to keep the unemployment going.

I’m sure energy and healthcare make up the bulk of the hiring but around Norman at least I have noticed pick up in construction activity.
