Thread: Green and Grilled

    Northwest OKC Green and Grilled

Anyone else tried this place? I found it via EataroundOKC. Ate there here last week and thought it was great. . . sort of a "healthy island" in a sea of fast food. Delightful portions for lunch. Didn't try the soups. . .will wait till cooler weather.

Work right around there...What is it by?

It's on the west side of the Target shopping center on Rockwell and NW Expressway. It's north of Ross, Famous Footwear, and Radio Shack.

I saw that a few weeks ago when I was going to the Target store but didn't know what it was. I only remembered that it had "Green" in the name.

Very glad our site was able to help you find a new place. We've had a lot of great comments about Green and Grilled from people who have tried it. In case anyone is interested, here's the link to our review:

Can't wait to try it. I love the signage. It looks like something that would be in Boulder or Seattle.

But unfortunately it's a horrible location and I doubt they last. We need more restaurants like this, but people need to do their homework. As they say, location, location, Location.

While I wont be going there much, if ever, because of the far western location there are still lots of rooftops and offices out that way that will most likely keep it in business. Just because you and I wont be going doesnt mean it will be going out of business metro. The good reviews this place has been getting will also help.

It's a horrible location for folks in the urban core, Metro. But as onthestrip says, it's not a bad location for a restaurant. It will do fine if it's as good as the reviews. Cheer on a restaurant like this, and maybe they'll open a second location closer to the inner-city.

Gotta disagree with you and onthestrip about the location, Steve. Just look at the history of food places in Rockwell Plaza: Crystal's, a pretty good cafeteria, Tommy's, the cake place that previously occupied the Green and Grilled location, my own Kernal's Korn (where Louie's now holds forth), the Super Salad that preceded Louie's in that location, a great but short-lived barbeque place on the west side -- and this is just a partial list of the ones that couldn't overcome the location. Granted there are a few that manage to survive, such as Chili's, KFC, CiCi's, and Schlotzky's, but almost all of them are fast-food outlets, not upscale operations. Access to Rockwell Plaza, despite the number of homes and offices in the area, is simply not very good for places like Green and Grilled -- unfortunately!

    The eataroundokc.com review started thusly:

If you love greasy, double-meat burgers dripping with cheese or over-sized breadsticks soaked in garlic butter then read no further. Green and Grilled is not the place for you.
Having often trusted their reviews, I found no reason to continue reading. They know me so well.

Why? Do you mean that those of us who live in the NW quadrant are not capable of appreciating and patronizing this business??? Obviously the folks who fronted the money thought it was a good idea and it is THERE money at risk.

Jim, don't force me to become a suburban defender... this is painful enough.

Always positive as well Steve. Funny I said nothing of the inner core, I could care less. But it has poor visibility, and is in the strip center, that section of the strip center has always done poorly. I hope I'm wrong. I'm out that way at least once a week and tried patronizing it, only to find it closed when I go by. If it was facing NWE it would be a whole other story

For that matter, it would be much better off if located over in Brixton Square, where Panera Bread seems to be doing all right. Rockwell Plaza, though, has pretty much always been a black hole for start-up food places.

It's not the whole NW quadrant that I consider to be bad location, just Rockwell Plaza. Even the locations on the east side of Rockwell would be much more promising...

Even up until they closed, the Crystals was there for quite a while (decades?) and always seemed fairly busy. Even the Mexican place that took its place (Pasados???) was good and seemed to be doing well. Then it closed and the building bulldozed to build a Chilis (relatively new, relocated from what is now Hideaway Pizza). :-(

Exactly my point, but leave it to Lackmeyer to take the cheap and lazy shot, keep in mind the only reason Chili's and Panera does well in these ovations is that they are a national chain with big ad budgets.

So obviously unless a restaurant is a national chain with big ad budgets they can never be successful in a non urban shopping center location. Have I got that right?
If that's the case I need to inform my neighbors at Cajun King that they should give it up even though their parking is always packed. It replaced a couple of failed restaurants in the same location so they have to be doomed as well since great food and great service don't count and it's all about location.

Went tonight with my husband and granddaughter. I just live across the NW highway from it and didn't know it was there until I saw it here. We all thought the food was great. No doubt we will add it to our restaurant list. You know the "list" ..." where should we go out to eat tonight dear? Well, how about here or there." Thanks foodiefan for adding this one to our "list"

This. I lived downtown, and now I live in a suburban area. My interest in good food didn't go away because I moved to a different area of the city. Just because a person either doesn't desire to live in the most urban area of the city, or simply can't afford it, doesn't mean that they are ignorant about non-chain restaurants. And now I want Cajun King.

Ehhh, IMO location has alot to do with getting some immediate walk-ins, but if a business is well financed an odd location with great reviews can be a magic mix. While a different kinda fare, Edmond's Cow Calf Hay is in a traditionally very bad location and my last two visits required a 10 minute wait for a table. But, again, the owners could afford to wait for customers to find them.

They stay in busines becasue they turn a profit. I have NEVER seen any ads for either business in those location so I guess it is neighborhood familiarity that is also a point to ponder. When one finds oneself in a hole it is best to quit digging.

Leave it to metro to get all super sensitive and read things into my comments that aren't there. Again, my sincerest apologies to you Metro for not getting my comment approved by you in advance of posting it. I don't buy into the visibility thing.... the really great restaurants thrive in some pretty obscure retail strips - note the Half Calf Cafe's location, the years of success for Allen's before the owners retired from the restaurant bs, etc. If Green and Grilled is as good as the buzz indicates, it will do fine.

I certainly hope that it does, since it's just about the closest place (other than fast-food outlets) to my home (one other one is just across the Expressway in Brixton Square, but I don't care for Japanese steakhouses all that often). The history of Rockwell Plaza, though, isn't all that great -- for any business, in fact, not just for restaurants. It took a horrible hit back in 1985, when Rockwell was closed off for much of the year and customers had extreme difficulty getting into the place, and its management hasn't been the best ever since. The sole multi-story building in the center is up for auction and the parking lot chronically competes in "largest chughole in the state" contests. My sole point in this thread is that they face an uphill battle because of their location; hopefully it won't take them down!
