Do you have more photos like that? Retro Metro OKC would love to scan those at high resolution, make sure they're available for future generations to see.

TNN (back when it was called that) did a marvelous documentary video of The Olympic Festival in Norman--live when it happened. I lived in L.A. at the time--and the previous year (thereabout) Los Angeles had one--a tiny crowd and mediocre event...I had friends over and they were all prepared to laugh at the dumb Okies and their silly attempt to put on such an event. They were blown away...right off the couch and out the front door and down the street. It was marvelous--and the stars there just were cream on the event...I merely said..."told you so"...and the Oak Ridge Boys did a stunning "Elvira"...great event.

I was at the opening ceremonies at a packed Owen Field. It was an amazing night.

Yes..it was Norman's finest moment in my opinion...and the fireworks were a great ending. I have a VHS tape of that program somewhere...need to convert it to DVD. The dovetail with the Centennial of Oklahoma was a nice fit. I was trying to remember...I know Bob Hope, Patti Page and James Garner (natch) were there--was Ronald Reagan there also? Who were the other big names that showed up?

Reba and Vince performed. And yes, Reagan was there. Flo Jo brought the flame into the stadium. Besides the fireworks, which were fantastic, there were also jet flyovers and skydivers landing on the field.

I remember the event like it was yesterday. I watched the torch run down Main St in Norman. The weather that evening was perfect and possibly the best fireworks display I have even seen. I had it on tape for years and one day I put it in the VCR and it ate it to pieces. It was a great time for everyone.

Someone should research from the TNN (the Nashville Network) archive--I would suspect they offer a DVD of it...would like to have one myself. Some of the readers here were not even alive (ha!) when it happened--but--they would enjoy it I am sure.

That seems like it should be something that the state historical society would be interested in preserving if they haven't already.

Regarding the Olympic Festival Ending Ceremony in Norman in 1989

For those who remember...the mass ending scene where they sang the state song "Oklahoma" with all the athletes joining in on the field was one of the more spectacular scenes you will ever see...perhaps there is some way to get that and make the video link of that part alone to show those who have not seen it how great it really was...with the fireworks ending the whole scene at the end of the song...a tribute to a wonderful group of planners who made it all happen...many thousands of Norman people were involved.

I wasn't in the stadium but was at the convenience store across Jenkins from the fireworks batteries. We too were about blown off the couch, but without the couch! Great show.

Somehow...I will find some way to get at least some of the program online...I have a pretty good VHS-SP version of it taped from good cable signal...

I have the abilty to make a DVD from it here from some of my consumer devices...
