Looks like new apartments are being constructed. anyone have more info on this?

I noticed that. They tore down 4 old houses and it appears to be possibly 20+ units. The design is not as good as the nearby 401 Lofts but good infill nonetheless. That area needs more of this..

saw this in the paper the other day :New multi-family home construction, 715 Monnett Ave., $1,122,000. Owner, Khouri and Jazzar Prop. LLC. Contractor, Rodolphe Khouri.

As it is Norman is Apartment Complex City. I can only imagine what kind of crap holes the older complexes will become.

will become? There are some places operating today which I passed on in the 80's as being more than a tad iffy. I don't know how they are still drawing residents 25 years later. Perhaps some substantial upgrading has taken place. The uni area actually had some of the worst in my opinion. I never rented in the spaces, but friends did. Two of those complexes (park and yorkshire) were demolished in recent years.

Might not relate to this thread, but I'm looking to move to Norman in the near future to attend OU. Any tips on apartments close to campus?

I knew of several people who lived off-campus who didn't have family within 30 miles; never asked how they got around that...

There are some real nice spring break year 'round themed apartments that operate in Norman. Maybe Campus Lodge is the place for you. or the Cottages. Or maybe you like living by the train tracks, in that case you could live in the Reserve off of Stinson, but that place is also spring break themed, just noisier every 30 or 60 minutes when the train rolls on thru. there is also a large apartment complex called bishops landing located right east of campus on brooks and the train tracks. about as cheap and as close as you can get to the central part of campus. I would say it is more utilitarian and is probably a great match for many college students, the downside is living near many college students !

Now if you want to walk or ride a bicycle to campus, there are some nice chopped up large 2 and 3 story houses that effectively offer apartments. or some nice converted to residential garages behind large single family homes with alley access ideally ! Look in the older housing stock neighborhoods north, just west or east of the OU campus. These locations might be considered quirky. You may end up with crooked floors, a neighbor with too many garden gnomes, drafty windows, or goofy neighbors, but one big advantage is avoiding the OU parking pass and the headaches that occur regularly from parking on campus.

Another interesting option is a former fraternity house on Chautauqua that rents out single rooms but is no longer a fraternity.

If you want to spend about a grand a month u could live in a loft on Main Street above some idealistic retail based businesses.

there are a couple co-op living houses near campus,however you may have to be initiated into that lifestyle before an offer of residence is given... If you want to live free or near there for the fall semester i would suggest finding a house/duplex/small multifamily with a large yard/driveway - near the stadium is best. Especially with the football team likely to be ranked near the top to start the season

Really your best bet is to drive around and look for signs in yards or check craigslist. Some of the best places dont put ads in the paper or craigslist even. Most landlords want to get their stuff leased up before the fall semester starts, so between now and the end of summer is the best time to find the place of your (college) dreams

Thanks, blangtang! I'm not a college freshman. I earned a BA from University of Texas at Arlington. Unfortunately, my degree does not translate to job opportunities; I'm returning to school, like many others, to pursue a better education. I'm not looking for "spring break living," but then again, I'm not dead yet...

Thanks for all the tips. I've been looking at all the "usual" apartment for rent websites. I hadn't thought about duplexes, old homes, and the like. Having driven around the area on many a Saturday afternoon/evening, I know a little plot o' grass could rake in a lot of dough!!
