Thread: Need help with sign project

  1. Default Need help with sign project

Hi fellow OKCTalkers, I'll be working on a new project over the next year or so and would like your help please.

I am photographing\documenting the unique, interesting and iconic signs in Oklahoma City and surrounding area.

Modern signs have become plain backlit rectangles that are cheap and effective, but not art appealing.

I want the ones that are. For example most of the bowling alleys and old motels have great lead-in signs. The old dry cleaners like Sunshine and Nu-Way have awesome signs that are still up.

Some of the new businesses have taken an existing sign and reused it.

Or even if they have just a rectangle, but it is iconic to OKC, (like the Soul Boutique) sign is what I am looking for.

So if you can think of any, give me the location and I'll hunt it down. Doesn't matter how large or how small. You can post it here on this thread or PM me. I sure appreciate it.

You can see the results on my website iconoklahoma: The Sign Project or my facebook page : http://www.facebook.com/pages/iconOklahoma/240102255914

By the same token if your were go east on s.w./s.e. 29th, what some people call the "oil patch" there are signs abundant. Hendershot Tools still has their sign atop their bldg, pretty rusty.

There is what is left of a large neon sign bearing the word FENCE.

Finns Sporting Goods and Hardware is made from what appears to be cut from solid steel. The brackets supporting the thing are immense.

A vestige of the old Split T sign is still up at the Sonic where their parking lot was. About NW 59th and Western. Wish the old Mayfair Shopping Center sign was still up. It was a doozy.

I did go out today and photograph a few signs, including the Deep-Rock sign. You can see them on my blog: iconoklahoma

I'm still working on the others. Keep suggesting them, thanks.
