Thread: Christmas Lights Thread

    Default Christmas Lights Thread

I believe I (or someone else) did one of these last year. We have a family tradition of going out looking at Christmas lights and are going on Friday night. Would love to hear the suggestions of the board. I'll start with our general tour:

We try to come downtown for the myria gardens, hit Mesta Park, Chesapeake, as well as Nichols Hills. I live North so don't usually go south of downtown when catching lights (especially since time is limited when carting a 2 year old around).

Last year we hit the houses over by Overholser that had the sychronized lights - wasn't sure if they were back again or not. I also think the one at 19th and Olie is back this year. Would love to hear more suggestions!

There's an awesome house in Thornbrooke in Edmond (33rd & Bryant). Enter off 33rd, take the 2nd right and follow around. Will be on your right side...

In NH, make sure you catch ALL of Avondale. All I'll say about that.

I have an awesome display to recommend in south Edmond. It's located just west of 150th and Santa Fe in "Oakmond". It's a gated community, so you may have to wait and catch someone else going in. It's the first house on the left, can't miss it. There are four songs that are sync'd to music (88.3 MHZ FM on your car radio).

I've still been meaning to pass through automobile alley and check out the lights through there.

i'm sure there are good areas to go on the southside, south of occc in those neighborhoods.

Yeah one year we went down to around SW 89th or so and saw some good neighborhoods, but in one evening, time is limited - but please post good lights whereever they may be in the city and burbs!

I did the lights on Markwell Avenue tonight and wow! 23rd and Council, west to Graham and south a block. Well worth it.

ah - those are the ones that were up last year and were so nice - several houses involved weren't there?

This one involves the entire block. 20 houses I believe. This is close to PC West and is in a neighborhood with many trees. I really can not descibe how incredible this is. All of the houses and trees and curbs are lit up and coordinated with the music on 102.3. The songs I sat through were Trans Siberian Orchestra. It is very impressive to watch from the end of the block where you can see all of the lights at one time. Expect large crowds on the weekends.

As mentioned above the lights on Marwell Ave. are fantastic again this year. I alos heard about a helicopter ride/christmas light tour opperating out of Wiley Post Airport.....it's a LITTLE pricey but I thought I'd add it to the list. It sounds really cool and would be a great one-time or romantic adventure.

Just drive around Nichols Hills, especially East of Penn. There are some great displays there.

Can you do drive thru there at night in a pickup? Or is that still a big NO-NO?

Christmas Lights - 12 Days of Christmas on Vimeo

Big synchronized display in Norman, Oklahoma with 180,000 LED lights, dancing to Relient K's '12 Days of Christmas'

There are other videos of previous lights shows at that same house so check them out! (who finds the time to do this?)

EDIT: Also had to add this one: http://vimeo.com/2550219 Amazing!

Ok - we went on our outting Friday Night, so if anyone has yet to go, I'll report on what I saw:

Thornbrooke, Edmond - I'm not sure which house we were looking for there - there were some houses that were moderately decorated, but didn't see anything too spectacular.

Markwell Lights, 23rd & Council - great just like Last year, really enjoyed them but be prepared to wait a little to see them

There is a house at 19th & Olie I believe that is sychronized - For a single house, it is very cool and I recommend it

Mesta Park - as usual, there are some good ones in here - wish more decorated in here since the size of the houses allows for some really cool decorations

Chesapeake has switched from white lights on Western to multi-colored LED's and it looks even more unbelievable that the white lights - I highly recommend it.

And Nichols Hills as always has some nice lights to check out.

Obviously not a very comprehensive list but just some that we saw and I thought I would share.

I went to this one on Friday night, it was lovely. Tune your radio to 107.1, pull into the field in front of the house and park. They play four different songs.

Do they still have a lot of christmas lights in Ski Island? It's been years since I have been out there.

Thanks for that great links, diggyba and MsDarkstar ... that's amazing stuff that family is doing, simply amazing. A couple of preparation pics from that site show a part of its massive size ...

... but the real deal comes in their videos (but better yet would be a drive down to Norman to take it in for real). The direct link to the videos is here:

A few screen captures are shown below:

The website says that, tip to tip, the whole thing is 300 feet wide ... a football field. The Downs family is kind enough to give exact directions:

Nope, I don't believe they have done that for quite some time.

I've added my "Merry Christmas" card at http://dougdawg.blogspot.com/2009/12...tmas-2009.html. It contains a flash video with music and downtown 2009 photos of Broadway, the Devon Ice Rink, Myriad Gardens, and Bricktown. When doing the trip last night to take most of the pics (Broadway had been done earlier), I was disappointed to notice that the area around the County Courthouse, which has in the past been decorated very beautifully, was barren ... cost cutting victim, I suppose. But there were many others that were grand. Some of the pics are blurry but my kind wife said, "I think they look good that way." She is too kind. I hope I get a decent tripod for Christmas ... one that doesn't have nylon or whatever fittings that break down much too soon ... I've gone through 3 of those crappy kind already.

I'll set out several of the pics in the flash file below ... click on images for larger views ...

    Broadway

    Sandridge Christmas Tree

    Devon Ice Rink

    Myriad Gardens

    Bricktown

I think maybe I'm getting religious again ... so I included Raphael's beautiful Sistine Madonna painting also, to wrap it up. Don't worry ... I'm not gonna go Sally Kern or Bobbie Burbridge Lane on you.

A very Merry Christmas to all!
