May 2 Move UP Downtown Living Tour to feature Local JANE’S WALK USA
Third annual urban literacy walks to take place in cities around the world

The Center for the Living City - in collaboration with the Centre for City Ecology in Toronto and Downtown OKC Inc. announces Jane’s Walk USA locally taking place on Saturday, May 2 as part of the Move UP Downtown Living Tour. The event is one of a series of free neighborhood walking tours honoring the legacy of urbanist Jane Jacobs.

Jane Jacobs was an urban activist whose writings championed a fresh, community-based approach to city building. She had no formal training as a planner, and yet her 1961 book, The Death and Life of Great American Cities, introduced groundbreaking ideas about how cities function, evolve and fail that are now common sense to generations of architects, planners, politicians and activists. Jane’s Walk USA commemorates her extraordinary commitment to community and is celebrated on the anniversary of her birthday each year.

Downtown OKC’s Jane’s Walk will feature a walking tour of Deep Deuce. The walk will be led by city planner AJ Kirkpatrick. The walk will begin at 3:00 outside the new Sage Gourmet Café & Market located at 228 NE 2nd St, stop number 6 on the Downtown Living Tour.

“Deep Deuce in Downtown Oklahoma City is a great place to host the local Jane’s Walk,” said Jane Jenkins, President of Downtown OKC Inc. “AJ Kirkpatrick is very knowledgeable about Jane Jacobs and planning, and he has a passion for Downtown. His tour will feature historical information and tidbits on what Jane Jacobs would think about the neighborhood, and what now makes Deep Deuce a vibrant, up-and-coming place to live.”

This is the third consecutive year for Jane’s Walks in North America and now, India. Other walks in 2009 are scheduled in Anchorage, Boston, Spanish Harlem, Salt Lake City, New Orleans, Washington D.C., San Luis Obispo, Omaha, Orlando, Phoenix, St. Louis San Francisco, Moscow, ID and Starkville, MS. Walks in Mumbai, Goa, Chicago and Oakland.

The Move UP Downtown Living Tour is produced by Downtown OKC Inc. and sponsored by the Downtown Business Improvement District, The Oklahoman, Downtown Magazine, Cox Communications and the Downtown Developers. Supporting sponsors include the Downtown Urban Neighbors (U.N.). For more information about Jane’s Walk, visit janeswalkusa.org.
