Some time ago I received a package from the "Mystery Man" it contained a group of 50's/60's musice...Mostly Doo-Wop style. I also received a version of trivia and music that I wish someone would post on this thread.....Please...What do you remember about the old timers music????anything?????
The Gazzete had Wanda Jacson on it's cover acouple of weeks ago. had a good feature article. She mentioed touring with and dating Elvis.
While I don't remeber it, supposedly Elvis played the civic center back in the
50's Story I always heard as a kid, he did something offensive and was banned from appearing in okc. Anyone know what it was? I do know it was
late 70's before he ever played okc area
I do remeber The Who playing at wedgewood 68-69 crowd was so big
they put them on the roof at the swimningpool building.
Also remeber seeing Frankie Avalon there as well.
The first concert I ever attended was Steppenwolf in 1968. It was in the
Civic Center.
I was there with my girlfriend who became my first wife so I have mixed reactions when I think about. The Civic Center was the best because they were acoustically built for sound. When the promoters and all got greedy and moved to the sports arenas, Fairgrounds, Myriad, and such they were not the same. There for a few years it seemed as if the opening band for any group was Black Sabbath. Never saw them as a headliner.
Concerts I remember seeing at the Civic Center.
Yes
Jethro Tull (Yes was the back up band!)
James Gang
Mountain
West, Bruce and Lange
Steppenwolf
B.B. King
Freddie King
National Symphony w/ Mislav Rostroprovich LOL
Climax Blues Band
Trapeze
Edgar Winter
Charlie Daniels
REO Speedwagon
Wishbone Ash
Black Oak Arkansas (really bad)
Good Grief... that's what I remember, now.
I played at there a few times
I'll add;
Alice Cooper (Back up for next act)
John Mayall (Didn't stay long for his performance, Alice Cooper ( Love It
to Death tour wore us out!!)
Jimmie Spheeris
It's a Beautiful Day
Jefferson Starship (Blows Against the Empire tour. After that Paul Kantar
left the group and they became the Starship; a pop band)
Pink Floyd
Frank Zappa
See if you remember this well known group. Sweat Hog!!!
Did you ever go to concernts at the People's Workshop? You were admitted by giving a donation, if you could. A band that was a regular was Ted Nugent and the Amboy Dukes!
I remember seeing Zappa there! George Duke was on keys and Jean-Luc
Ponty on violin. I'll never forget the wah-wah pedal solo everyone did
including the violin! That was the "Overnight Sensation" concert. He always
did a concert for the upcoming album.
I vaguely remember Sweat Hog.
I never missed Zappa. He is my all time favorite. Hated by my family; parents, siblings, ex wives, children........I still play him often and loud.
I went to a concert at the fairgrounds but it was not at the arena. It was in one of the large building there. Only concert I camped out to get tickets for.
Bob Dylan's Rolling Thunder Revue. Dylan, Joan Baez, Roger Mcguinn, Kinky Friedman.........
It was well worth the time and money.
Don't ever remember the Dead playing here but I did go to Tulsa to see them.
That concert was in, what was then called, the International bldg, I think.
They had boxing there.
The Dead played at the Fairgrounds @78 or 79. They had their new Crown
and McIntosh sound system. It was rather incredible to hear, even in the
eternally echoing Fairgrounds Arena. We were on the ground.
I rarely listen to the music of that era anymore. Occasionally I'll listen to
KRXO. I'm too much into Classical and Jazz.
Maybe I did see the Dead here. When we sent to Tulsa it snowed all the way to and from. Big flakes. It was at their fairgrounds in what was nothing more than an unheated cow barn. Don't blame ya'! I don't listen to KRXO, KATT, or BOB. Used to listen to the BUZZ when they played good alternative. Now it seems mostly screamin' metal. I do listen to some jazz. Classical....Wagner! In the car listen to sports or talk radio mostly. My music is at home on vinyl.
Was not here for the 50's, do remember the American graffiti revival of that era.
60's was not pleasant for me musically, had family who I knew were the greatest, serving in Nam, and family who fought and survived WWII saddened by what America had become, so all of the drug protest noise (not music) was not listened to very much.
Did listen to KOMA at night on the transistor.
70's were the big stuff for me.
Peter Frampton, best concert I personally saw was ELO at the Myriad. lasers it was amazing. Boston, Kansas
Have a redneck blow my head off with a shotgun. Pump to be exact.
Prunepicker is going to give me hell for this!!!
All my prior music listings and I just now learned that Okie Hoyt Axton wrote "The Pusher".
My outlaw pride is crushed.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
i know i'm out of you and the Prunepickers Musical League...But, I saw (front row) Kris Kristofferson at the Municipal Auditorium and Saw John Denver in the International building at the State Fair Grounds. Drank a beer with Hank Thompson in Las Vegas at the Fremont Hotel ..... Even had lunch with Norma Jean.....but, you guys aren't country are you????
I'm particularly fond of the Ink Spots and their song "I don't want to set the world on fire". Though they are more of a 40s band.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
As a young kid, I remember the Ink Spots coming and performing in OKC...I'm probably wrong about the place but the Trianon Ballroom is where I thought they were. My aunt went there quite a bit and that's why it comes to mind...
Sorry to ruin the thread but 'good ole days' music for me would be Dr. Dre's "The Chronic". Brings back memories of 8th grade!
