Thread: Hello Oil Tower

  1. Default Hello Oil Tower

Anyone seen the new oil drill in Del City on 29th west of the cemetary?

I was suprised to see it there. I told mom, look at that, they drilling oil, but gas still isn't going down. LoL

I do not know what attracted the drillers to this spot. Maybe the city boom since WalMart was built? Sad to see such a land gone to waste. It could have been good for development use.

Anyone know how deep that thing goes?

It's about as deep as the oil!

And the depth of the oil is?

    Default Re: Hello Oil Tower

    8,932 ft. 11 inches.

  5. Default Re: Hello Oil Tower

Hmmm. The tower doesn't look tall. Amazing how they can drill so deep.

Now, we'll just have to wait for earthquakes from it.

No oil for the rocks/dirts/whatever to float on.

You know, i've wondered how, after oil is completely irradiated from a spot beneath the earth, what happens to the ground above it? Does it cave in.. do they fill it with another liquid?

  7. Default Re: Hello Oil Tower

I'm not sure of that. I've read about drillings causing earthquakes, but not to severe.

I live less than 1/2 mile from it and I can hear that oil well day and night even inside my house. I can see it towering over the houses across the street. I would not mind it if it would equate to lower oil prices but it will not. If you get on a high spot, you can see there are three oil wells that have sprung up within two miles from here. If you turned the TV on channel 4 on Wednesday or Thursday, you would have seen how many earthquake calls came in between SE 44th and SE 59th at Sunnylane.

This particular well site is being used to access oil in several different sections, through horizontal drilling. The company that owns the well donated a large amount of their land to the City. One piece will be used sometime down the line to build a detention pond that will drastically reduce flooding on Cherry Creek. Another part will be used to build a road and water line that will allow several large residential developments on land that is currently landlocked. From what I have heard, the oil company has been nothing but a very good neighbor. Also, it bears mentioning that the owners of the company grew up just a few miles from this new well, so this is not some out of state or foreign company.

So you want the price of gas to go down, just as long as we don't drill/refine the oil we need to make it? That mentality has gotten us into the bind we are in now.

This sounds exciting. Thanks for the information.

Yeah, it is less than half a mile from mom.

How long will it remains in operation?

To answer the question about what they do with the hole after they drill.

There are different options that can occur after a well is used, but they don't just leave a big hole in the ground with any of them.

You can re-frac a well, which uses high pressure fluids re-injected underground to re-fracture the surrounding land to release extra oil stuck in the rocks. You'll definitely notice if that's being done because you'll see the entire pad filled with semi-truck sized equipment...and it's dirty.

You'll find that they generally put fluid back in to support the surrounding land..ie to prevent a sinkhole from forming. It's not just plain water they shove back in there, but this process can often create some tremmors. If you remember the small earthquakes last year around 240 caused by drilling there. Of course anyone in the industry tried to say it wasn't their fault....and who believes that?

The oil is trapped under high pressure within the pores in rocks. Once the well is drilled, the pressure forces the oil from within the rocks into the wellbore. Once the oil is gone, the rocks remain. Wellbores are 'plugged and abandoned' with concrete when they no longer make money.

That entire piece was originally a Parker Drilling sight. There are several old abandoned oil wells already on site. In addition there is some minor soil contamination from the parker drilling days so this is a good alternate use for this.

    Here an update!

The oil tower is back up. Was down and gone, but now it is back up and operating. I can see the pole spinning.

Who owns this tower? Looks like they got the funding back.

Being in the business this is usual and is something the company I work for does. Sometimes, even if a well is producing, we shut it in when market conditions are not favorable. basically when daily operation costs outperform the daily revenue. It is not uncommon. Just think of putting a cork back in a wine bottle and coming back at at a later date.

as for who operates is Ill check up on it at work tomorrow.

I am thinking you are right. I live in that neighborhood just to the North of that well and I can smell oil at my house when the wind comes from the South. I just noticed it Friday.

  22. Default Re: Hello Oil Tower

I wonder if this had anything to do with the earthquake.
    " You've Been Thunder Struck ! "

  23. Default Re: Hello Oil Tower

That is what I was thinking. Maybe they hit something, abandoned quickly, covered up tracks, then bam the earthquake.

  24. Default Re: Hello Oil Tower

That's what happened before...and it's not that far away. Of course the drilling company would deny all responsibilty claiming there's no evidence. Bunch of bull for sure...100%

Haha I seriously doubt that their drilling had anything to do with it.
