Thread: General Weather Discussion - June 2015

    Fascinating. Thanks for posting that.

I'm an engineer by education and partly vocation (PE in civil); stormwater was my main focus in college, so this area of study is very interesting to me. The recurrence intervals are based on a long-term historical average, but it appears that the average and the intervals may need adjusting. In the past decade, OKC has had at least to 500-year events and multiple 100-year events. The probabilistic definition of these events means that this is not out of the realm of possibility, but the theme is that these size of storms are happening much more frequently than probability indicates.

The storm really went over the top to a highly unfortunate extent in south central Oklahoma where rainfall amounts were between 7 and 12+". No wonder boulders crashed down on I-35 there, and it had to be closed. Interesting how the Arbuckle Mountains were blamed for jacking up the precip amounts. When I drive through there on I-35, it just seems like a very long, fairly short hill.
Growing up south of the Arbuckles, I can say there are a lot of superstitions about those old mountains regarding the weather. So much of the time a system would be up here, get to the mountains, and turn. Usually winter events. Unless it was coming from the south, we got nothin'. It was the strangest thing to see over and over again.

One of two levees on the north side of Lake Texoma (NW of Durant) breached today. Part of SH-78 (between Durant and Bonham, TX) at the Red River washed out today as well.

Most insurance companies have discounts on premiums if you have a metal roof.
Unfortunately my neighborhood association would take legal action against me of I put on a non-conforming roof, such as a metal roof… We will stay compliant. But I believe we may need to look at state laws that override such strict rules that would not let improved products be used…. For example my neighborhood association would not allow the improved solar panels if I wanted them…

I continue to believe that we need more university research on building materials that are more survivable in severe weather. Over the long run stronger building codes will save our state’s economy billions by reducing deaths, very costly injuries and lost property.

It doesn't look like summer will be a real hot one:

    Just a general update:

Ring of fire continues through Friday, chance of rain/storms Friday night.

Upper 80s for Sat/Sun then right back to ring of fire next week.

There must be a lot of moisture still in the ground. Mowed my yard 3 days ago and already need to hit it again in a lot of places. Big tufts of grass popping up all over.

Right now looks like Friday evening. Depends on the timing of the front. We will have a good idea tomorrow.

GFS hinting today that the ring of fire may be broken next week, leading to some slightly cooler temps and some pop-up chances of rain.

Front came in quicker than forecast.

Any chance of precip. should remain to the SE of C OK. Enjoy the 80s for the weekend!

Looks like Minco had a localized but very strong downburst in those storms. Mesonet station recorded a gust to 96 mph.

That was pretty interesting. Storm was moving about 5 mph and drifting west. They got over 2 inches of rain in very short time.

I was in Edmond mid -evening and it was sweltering and suddenly wind blew and cooled way off. Was nice!

From the downpour that began in northern Oklahoma County late morning, 7/9, and moved northeast to Stillwater, I got 1.10" out of it, while the west side only got .14". Interesting how the weather goes.

From the map below, for the last five days, OKC was able to dodge fantastic amounts of rain for a change. Missouri, Arkansas and southwest Illinois have also had a lot of rain.

Ring of fire will be 100% this entire week. Say goodbye to the green grass.

Neither did I. So I give up posting weather notices. Surely some one else can gladly and easily do it better. Probably most people already know about them from other sources, anyway.
