Thread: Temp set on thermostat?

  1. #1

    Default Temp set on thermostat?

After 2.5 decades of living in a place where I either didn't have an a/c unit at all or only used it once or twice a year, I am still adjusting to the Oklahoma heat.

I'm curious what temperature people set on their thermostat at home.

A friend just told me he keeps it at 71 when he's home and 74 when he isn't.

    What say you?

76 when I'm not home and 73 when I am. I love my programmable thermostat. Figured it's save me bunches over the years, and I come home to a house that's comfortable. My next upgrade will be a nest thermostat.

when i'm at home 72 (in august i when i go to sleep - 70). When i'm away, it goes to 80. I have a Nest, so it turns on and starts cooling the house down before i come home from work.

73 during the day -mostly unless I cooking up a fancy meal and have a house full of guest. 70 at night. I've read you sleep much better under temperatures at 70 or lower.

75 year round when we are home. Up a degree or two when we go to bed in the summer and maybe turn on a fan. Down four or five at night in the winter with an extra blanket.

I've been trying to get away with 76 and this feedback has confirmed that that is really not low enough.

I'm going to try 75 when I'm home and see how that works. I *hate* throwing money away on electric bills but looks like I'm going to have to pay more to be comfortable.

74 when I'm not home or during peak times while on Smart Hours and 70-72 otherwise. It takes a really hot day for the house to hit 74. Use an Iris by Lowe's thermostat that is set to a schedule. I can also manually control it by my phone if needed.

I have a house with new windows (2014) and it got to 76 in my house today. I wouldn't even consider this too hot of a day. It was muggy here in Norman.

76 when away. 74 when at home. 71 when in bed..... I just finally turned mine on for the first time on May 30th..

Mine never came on today when set at 74, but every house is different. Says it got up to 73, but that's it. When it does come on (during the hottest of days) though, we really don't notice much of a bump in the monthly bill. This is one reason we don't go to extremes even when on Smart Hours. Even when we are in critical pricing, I still leave it on 74. I might bump it up if I'm not going to be home all day. I've let it get hotter inside in years past, but, like I said, the savings was so little I don't worry about the setting much these days.

I would love that -- But the wife would kill me. She likes it warmer than I do. I can tolerate most any temp, but i really like it cold when I go to sleep.

Have it set on 70. Looking at thermomider in bedroom, 72. House feels hotter then that. I may go down to 68 tomarrow. My systems doesn't keep up. I am looking at replacing it sometime soon.

74 all day. 70 for sleeping. Sleep much better at 70 and below. We find after camping for two weeks, we can keep it warmer during the day and night for awhile until we acclimatize again by spending the work day in air conditioned spaces, then we have to have it cooler at night to sleep. We keep it at 78 when we are on vacation during the summer.

73-74 during the day when we're gone. 71-72 when home and 68-70 at night. I like it cold at night. If it wasn't for out little dog in the house, we would probably keep it around 76 when we were away.

    72 in early evening
68 at night since master bedroom is on the warmer side of the house
    77 during day when gone

That's the only temp where our house is cool enough at day and night any higher and it is sweltering hot in the house.

Air is completely off when at work (8-5). Turn on when I get home or right before (nest thermostat). It helps I live in a fairly new (and small) place with an efficient AC unit. It can cool from 80F inside down to 74-76 in a couple hours. Also I believe AC units run more efficiently when they run in a full swoop, instead of turning on and off repeatedly. This strategy has saved me a ton of money.

Depends on humidity and temperature but currently my thermostat is set for 76. I always keep the ceiling fans turned on in the den and living room which helps keep the air temps consistent. It is cheaper keeping a ceiling fan running rather than the air conditioning.

  24. Default Re: Temp set on thermostat?

72 when at home, 78 when not.

Downstairs stays nice and cool on 74. Upstairs 76 on the zone with the kid's bedroom and extra rooms, and 74 in the master bedroom.

We have geothermal, which makes our monthly bills much, much lower than they would otherwise be. If we didn't, I'd probably keep things a degree or two warmer to economize.
