Thread: Good tire place?

  1. Default Good tire place?

Looking for a good place to get some tires, probably a used tire place because I really don't want to have to pay for new ones.

In my experiences buying tires ive gone both routes and in buying new tires you will actually save money over the long run.

If you want the cheapest, I'd say Jone's Tire in Moore. If you want the best work, Discount Tire along I-240 or Hibdon Tire.

I understand the need to save money, but I'm not sure 'brakes' is where I'd cut corners.

I've never bought used tires, but I've known people who dealt in them - not the types to be trusted - only one I've known was the exception. You might call Big Discount Tire on S. Robinson Ave. and ask for Jose Guerrero (the owner).

As for new tires - I love the big chain Discount Tire.

Don't ever buy cheap tires...I have many personal examples but it boils down to don't buy cheap tires or used tires

Always use Hibdon's. I wouldn't recommend going cheap on tires.

Tires are very important to the safety of you, your family, and others on the road around you. Please do not buy used tires or cheap ones not recommended for the use of your vehicle.

Best place to buy tires for me was Tire Rack, which a local retailer was able to price match them for me and install. Also Discount Tire, or as also mentioned Hibdons.

Call around and see if you can find some new take offs. These are tires that come on new vehicles and many times the buyer wants bigger/better tires and these tire shops take the take offs in on trade. You can save quite a bit on new take off tires. I know there is a place in Norman that advertises on the sports animal (screetch the truck stops here LWM?) that sells them. I bought a brand new set of 4 from them a few years ago for a PU I had and saved about $60.00 per tire. These tires have to be sold as used because they are but many of them had less than 20 miles on them.

I also recommend Discount. The location in Moore has been great. I also once found tires on Tire Rack for cheaper, and submitted it to Discount Tire online and they agreed to price match.

I know it makes some folks worrisome, But I've often purchased used tires for the last two plus decades. Not always, but frequently.
Tire Stop in Norman on N Flood (Flood and Acres, 1/2 way between Main and Robinson) and its predecessor have been my go to folk for many years.

I've also picked up dang decent tire sets, for my family and others as well, from folks who went and purchased new rims and tires for a vehicle that didn't really need a changeover, but they decided to do one anyway.

    on edit:
they can also set you up with new tires if one prefers new. nice folks there.

If your hurting for some tread and low on cash Pino's on SW 29th ain't too bad. He lets you look the tire over before he mounts it. May not get you up to 120 mph but it will get you to work.

Discount Tire is the best store out there in my honest opinion. You can shop online and set an appointment for the install. All they do is tires and nothing else. They get you in out in about an hour. Hibdon's isn't bad either. They have a 59 minute guarantee or you get $59 back.

I use LWM in Norman. Talk to Jamie. He has always treated me right and he has great prices on tires, and tire/wheel combos. He deals in new take offs that can save you money, but stay away from used tires. A lot of those used tire places re-groove their used tires to make them look like they have more tread than they do, plus, you don't know what direction the tires were originally ran, or how many times they've been mounted and dismounted, which can cause major problems later.

Believe it or not, Sam's Club has some really good deals on tires. I did some research on a few models and discovered that they sell certain manufacturer's tires under different badging - same tire/tread/ratings, just a different retail name, eg Michelin XYZ at regular retail, but Michelin ABC at Sam's - but typically 20-30% less than the conventional retail brand. Lifetime roadhazard, balancing, and rotation warranty is included with their pricing, but you must keep the rotation current for the tread warranty to be honored (which is pretty typical).

I've bought my last three sets of tires from Sams and have been 100% satisfied, and would do so again without hesitation.

I have had some flat repairs done at Hibdon's, but based on some other experiences there from some family members, I don't know if I could recommend them generally for bigger work...some instances of sketchy work "recommendations", particularly to female customers...won't say it was a "company practice," but it made me generally hesitant going forward. YMMV, so caveat emptor

Not certain on this, but is Hibdon's now just another Firestone facility albeit still marketed under the Hibdon name?

    Kevin,
Tires Plus bought Hibdon's about 15 years ago. I don't know if there is a connection to Firestone. I will say that Hibdon's has always been good to me. Including replacing a tire that went flat and my son had to drive on to get out of traffic, so it wasn't replaceable under their road hazard warranty. I told them and they said not to worry about it. Also, I just got a flat fixed, $12 at most places and they didn't charge me. And it wasn't even one of their tires, it's the original from the factory. They have never charged me for fixing a flat, and living out in the boonies with dirt roads, I have had quite a few flats.

I was a customer of Sam's from time to time for tires. But I found Discount Tire will match any competitors price (even online ship direct sellers). My big turn off to Sam's was when I took a car in for a tire rotation and realized they don't follow the manufacturer's recommended tire rotation pattern. Another time I went for a battery and they broke a mounting bracket and it took way too much effort on my part to get them to pay for the repair.

Also, last time I checked Discount Tire's warranty was the best. I had a curb nic (took a piece of the rubber off the sidewall) in a very expensive Michelin. Didn't think it would be covered because I obviously hit the curb myself. No questions asked they took the tire off and gave me another one. I'm thinking it was a $300 tire too.

Definitely take advantage of the competition between discount tire and Hibdons. Today I was originally quoted by Hibdons 923 bucks for 4 all terrain tires (Bridgestone). I called discount and they were selling them for 40 bucks cheaper per tire but didn't have them in stock. Hibdons matched the price and matched the 75 rebate discount tire was offering. I ended up getting the tires from Hibdons for $677! Just call around and you can drive the price down pretty easily.

I've had great success and service at John's Auto at 7501 NW 23rd, which
is NW 23rd and N Glade. Not once have I felt cheated or taken advantage
of. He's a Goodyear dealer but won't hesitate to find a tire for your vehicle
that's from another company to fit your budget.

Is Garcia Tire Service (just north of SE 15th and Eastern) still around?
They were good enough to provide re-tiring services for a trucking firm for which I once worked.

There used to be a little place out there in Choctaw . . .
Somewhere next to Henny Road . . .
(I think it was Family Owned, then went MetroTire . . .)

(sorry. this is a non-nostalgic new or used good tire thread)

One I forgot about that several friends use is Swanson's Tire downtown. I've never used them but I know some people, including two police officers that really like them. I've compared their prices before and they were very competitive. The only reason I did use them if they wanted my car basically all day and if I had a problem I had to go back to their one location. With Discount Tire you're in and out in 30-60 minutes and they have locations everywhere.

Like you BBatesokc, I have a favorite but I should mention a really good mom and pop place in Edmond, W & W tire. I have had several things done there, tractor tires primarily. I haven't compared their tire prices, but they seem to be busy all the time so I suspect they are competitive.
