Thread: Basil

Went to NuNu's today. Really like the interior. Food tasted very fresh. Food tasted better and seemed fresher than either Basil or Garbanzo.

I really need to get to more Mediterranean places around here. Or, I could just go to Kabob 'n Curry more often. Win-win. But really, I should branch out.

Basil Med was fine for me, but I think I chose well. The other time I went, I had a beef kabob and rice and it was pretty much just like Zorba's. The pistachio baklava was my favorite. Had a bit of a kick to it. Zorba's has the yummy tomato-artichoke soup on Sundays that I've not had anywhere else.

Feel free to suggest places for us to visit! This next time we're going in the morning so we could use some breakfast places to try. We only have about 90 minutes, though, so it has to be close to the city center Last year we hit up Classen Grill and Cafe Kacao for breakfast.

Kitchen 324 can be done, and without going crazy on pricing. Added bennie - they will smile all day long, making their other teachers wonder what they are up to.

Might consider Nic's for a breakfast review. Every time I've been for breakfast its never been very busy - while the menu doesn't have a lot of variety, it makes for a fun visit with real good (and big) food in a tiny establishment.

We've talked about Kitchen 324, and while I've not been there (yet) and hear such great things, we are concerned about finding parking for multiple cars during that time of day downtown. But it's definitely on the list!

I've never thought of Nic's for breakfast. Hmm. I'll throw that in the suggestion pile

There are about 200 street spots to park within a 2-3 block radius, plus garages. And the Sandridge garage is free and open to Kitchen patrons on the weekend and evenings once we open for dinner on November 19. I attached a map. :-)

bandnerd, when I go to 324, it is always early. I haven't needed to find parking, but the streets surrounding it were near empty when I depart. But then, I tend to arrive when they are just opening (not a fan of crowds myself.)

Unfortunately, we are slaves to the school schedule (we only do reviews during a long block that happens once a month and the class period moves around...it's hard to explain) so this time we will be there around 9:30 on weekday. But I like the idea of the free garage on the weekends for my own culinary purposes!

Yeah, we are just kind of bound to a schedule. I wish we could change it. Perhaps on a day when we get our class plus lunchtime (in total about two hours) we can go down there and really enjoy the experience!

How many students involved? What restrictions do you have on doing in-kind services for advertising space? If you have any flexibility, perhaps a ride to/fm a place in exchange for some ad space with some local company which offers transport services for prom groups winter dances, etc.?

If straight out ad space isn't possible, what about a plug as part of the story, like the nods given to the companies who provide things for game shows.

Would you consider what is available at Caper's to be Mediterranean food?
We ate there once and I thought it was fantastic.

Have you thought about arranging a field trip with your students to Chefs di Domani (the cooking school at Platt College on Memorial)? We've eaten there a couple of times and I think that it is one of the hidden jewels of the culinary arts in OKC.

RM, this is about Basil instead of Capers at 63rd and Meridian.

We have ad space available on our site, I'd just have to create the ad, unless they have something ready-made.

It's a small group, they're just nervous about parking downtown Parallel parking and whatnot.

Oh, who am I kidding? I'm also nervous about parallel parking. We'll have to see if our next block schedule gives us the extended time, and I'll bring 324 up again. We really like to take our time!

My GF is Lebanese and I've been trying to get her to try Basil to give an assessment. Incidentally she really likes the newish place "Hummus" is Moore on 19th.

    They are planning an expansion:

Nice.... I don't know what their dinner crowd is like but it can be difficult finding a table in there during their lunch rush.

Good to hear they are expanding. My wife and I were hitting it pretty frequently when we lived in the area for awhile. I don't recall the guys name that owns/runs it but he was always super friendly when I would go in to grab it to-go and we always thought it was pretty good and very affordable.

Now they need to bring the sidewalk closer to the building, separate it from 23rd with landscaping, and remove that legacy curb cut. Step 1 (of 490) to making 23rd pedestrian friendly!

I walked most of 23rd between Western and Robinson a few nights ago and there was trash and weeds everywhere.

This is a big problem just about everywhere in OKC. More trashcans (that actually get emptied instead of left to overflow, if there are any at all) would go a long way.

I'd be happy to pick up trash if there was someplace to put it and I know the cans would get emptied on a regular basis.

There used to be that guy who cleaned up 23rd but they ran him off when they rehabbed the building where Hurts Donuts is now (had been his home and cleaning supply depot). I hope he's ok, whereever he ended up.

Family Dollar parking lot is the absolute worst for this.
