Thread: The Flu

None in my family have gotten the flu yet this year (knock on wood), but several coworkers and some of my kid's friends have come down with it (or that stomach virus). I did get this year's flu shot back in November, but only because it was free and convenient (got it at work). I normally don't bother and haven't gotten seriously ill for five years (I think, it's been too long to remember).

I have heard that this year's shot was effective for about 60% of strains that are being seen this year so far. Does that sound about right to those of you in the business?

Anyone know what the - what do you call it - gestational period? - period is from exposure to symptoms? Or how long you are contagious?

I think its around 24-48 hours. And ive always heard when your fever has gone back to normal you are no longer contagious.

Yes. But things like Tamiflu, Zycam, Perlite, and Xylemicon mask the symptoms, the onset, and the transferrablility. At least of the strain of flu that The Official Vaccination missed this time.

It took a half hour beating my head against the wall, but the term, I believe, is "incubation period".

    Whew.

hahaha!! Thanks. I hope you didn't hurt yourself and feel bad that you spent so much time. I am starting to reach a point where I know this stuff but figuring out what mental file it's in is sometimes tricky. What did people do before google? I find myself using it to track down words - at least when I'm motivated.

I have a good memory and exercise it regularly to keep it sharp. Lately, however, I seem to be losing a thing or two into my head, so when I know I know something, I'll not give up the recall, even if the 'head beating' is figurative in nature.

Flu empties some Oklahoma classrooms | NewsOK.com

Seems like a bit much. However it did say over half of the students didn't show up. So I guess it doesn't really matter.

Gives a more literal meaning of the term "filthy lucre"

Not at all. Fortunately Oklahoma isn't one of the states in short supply. However, even after getting the shot, it can take up to 2 weeks before it protects you completely and this years version is about 75% effective (they take an educated guess as what strains of the flu are going to be the most prevalent for the next year and make the vaccine based on that)...if you get a strain that isn't included...still better than nothing at all

I did get the yearly flu shot (have for the past few years) and the 5 year one and came down with something late Sunday night. Was able to get into the doctor and get the Tamiflu thing. According to the company website it is something like 92% effective if you haven't developed any symptoms yet (10 day preventative). And if taken within the first 48 hours of developing symptoms, can reduce the severity/duration by about a third (5 day treatment). With my insurance and $10 coupon I got off the site (Flu Treatment and Flu Prevention Medicine | TAMIFLU® (oseltamivir phosphate)), it only cost me $21 for the 5 day supply. After about 24 hrs I am completely symptom free and returned to work today

Reviving this thread. Flu has been running rampant through our office. I've been lucky this far, but today I lost. Woke up feeling horrible and tested positive for Influenza A.
Hopefully it's early enough and Tama flu will help shorten it. I did get a flu shot . Glad this is a 3 day weekend. Temps next week look brutal right now.

Ya ran through our house over Christmas. Only one of my kids actually got a fever. Everyone else was just run down for about 3 days each then back to normal. That week our doctor had said she saw 90 patients that day and all but 3 tested positive for Flu.

Don't worry the next week we all got norovirus. I'd rather have the flu than that again.

I had to look that up. Norovirus is what we used to call the Stomach Flu?

There is also something going around that is not the flu or norovirus. I had it for 2-3 weeks and had the exact same thing a year ago. Starts out as a sinus/throat thing then moves to your chest as a dry cough. Ran a 100.5 fever for the first week with mild body aches then week 2 the fever goes away and the throat/sinus gets better but the cough hangs on for week 3. I did not take a covid test and AFAIK I have never had covid.

A lot of coughing going on. I think that's how I got it from someone. Mine isn't too bad yet. More congestion and low fever

Yes vomiting, diarrhea and fever for about 24 to 48 then better. Super easy to give to others and hand sanitizer does not kill it. Bleach all areas the person was sick at and wash all things on hot. It aint pretty

Years ago I had what had to have been norovirus in my house, though we weren’t tested for it. Might be the worst I’ve ever felt, including multiple bouts with COVID. Everyone violently threw up - A LOT - every 35 minutes at its peak (yes, we timed it). Gradually it settled down to once an hour, then once every couple of hours, before it finally went away. One and a half days of it.

I’ll take flu over norovirus any day of the week. Pneumonia, on the other hand… …I’d have to give that one some thought.

First two days seem to be the worst. Friday night and Saturday felt like an out of body experience. I feel better today, not 100%, but no aches and chills.
I never had norovirus that I recall. Maybe stomach flu as a kid, but not as an adult.
