Thread: Happily OKC Radio Free for 6 months

Default Happily OKC Radio Free for 6 months

I have had a hate/disgust relationship with OKC radio for a long time. Between forced laughter, no show prep, hosts way past their prime who have given up and merely exist on air, low quality hosting, and narrow song choices, I have long been been looking for an escape. It just seems like the entire market is alternatively hokey or bored.

For the past 6 months, I have been a heavy user of the TuneIn app on my phone. A plug-in Monster cable gives good sound quality and the pair has allowed me to find stations in other markets that actually have quality.

I read on another post of a concern about the 'corporate strangehold on the OKC radio market' and I am here to tell you that you can escape.

I've had xm radio in my car since October of 2007... combine that with pandora and I luckily haven't had to listen to terrestrial radio in so long, I have ALMOST forgotten how horrible it is... almost...

Even with some decent stations here in L.A. I almost never listen to local radio.

The only exception is I'll flip on AM radio when I first get into my car to check on any major traffic problems. If I ever got around to paying for the traffic service on my GPS system I wouldn't even need that.

My iPhone is connected to my car sound system and if I'm not listening to my own music, it's set to Pandora.

I didn't realize how awful FM radio is until I bough my car this past summer with a free 6 month trial for XM/Sirius. It was like an instant breath of fresh air.

I will still listen to morning shows just for the entertainment value, after that its strictly XM.

I can tell you that "corporate radio" has ruined most markets, not just OKC. It makes me depressed to go back to DFW and see just how bad all of the stations have become since I've moved from there.

While I generally agree, I do like the new oldies station. They seem to play a good variety for a national broadcast. I mostly listen to NPR and the Sports Animal, anyway.

The Edge. Sad at what it has become.

I agree as well, I have Sirius in the car and also routinely use my phone to stream radio from around the world... I have not listened to local radio in years and am really happy about that.

My main issue is Why does OKC need 3 Classic Rock Stations? I'd figure they could spare one for an Alternative rock station.

Personally, I don't get why we need so many dang country stations. Seriously, I know there are a lot of country fans here, but why do we need more than three stations?

Also, I don't get why the same Christian talk radio station has a simulcast on two other frequencies. Is that really necessary?

I dunno, the only stations around here I can stand to listen to are 104.1, 92.5 (sometimes), and 99.7. But I only do that when my MP3 player needs to be charged up. :P I should look into getting internet radio from my phone. That sounds really cool.

No radio stations are necessary at all but if they have listeners they will remain on the air. If don't they will go off. It's that simple. You aren't required to listen to any radio format that you don't like.

Does anybody here have a true "Internet Radio" like the Squeezebox? I've been around them a few times and swear that's my next tech purchase.

The NPR out of Norman is great radio, IMO. Though their Sundays can tend to be a bit lame. Then it's Deadmau5 on Pandora for me.

We have a Squeezebox at home and like it. I have daughters that like to turn it to stations in other countries and listen to the different languages.

We also have some favorite stations we listen to from other markets. It is easy to work with and we never have a pause or any issue with it.

To have Pandora, NPR, BBC (domestic stations), KRLD, and so many other stations, all on presets at my bedside, it's pretty tempting.

I like the Classic Country station KXY. I wish OKC had a Jack FM still.
