Thread: Water taxis / Oklahoma River

Default Water taxis / Oklahoma River

I thought the grand plan was to join the Oklahoma River and the water Taxis together by a walking trail. I looked yesterday and all I seen was a tall fence to keep you from going toward the Oklahoma river. It look liked it was in the works but no progress has been made.

The waterway has not been extended beyond the Chesapeake Boathouse. The bridge on the new I-40 route is in place as it was practically the first project. Once the extension is made then I'm sure the fence will be taken down. When this happens though, there is no telling.

so whats the true purpose of having water taxis on the north canadian, err..i mean, the oklahoma river anyways?

is it for recreational purposes solely? or will it be instrumental in actually serving as a transportational link connecting pedestrians from one point of interest to another?

I was thought the idea was be able to get on a boat on Meredian Landing and float all the way to bricktown. The Oklahoma river cannot be in direct contact with the canal due to it being on city water.

This would be able to connect all of the hotels out West with the hotels along the bricktown canal. Shuttles would drop the riders off at the landing.

maybe they could devise a legal loophole around that by instituting the usage of canal locks akin to the way the Panama canal works, that way the waters of each source will not become intertwined.

Excellent idea. During December instead of tubing at the ball park you could tube in the Oklahoma River!!!!

There's an arm of water that extends north of the river on the west side of the Chesapeake Boathouse. This is where, currently, the riverboats dock. The plan is to extend this body of water under I-40. It would be hard to extend the canal unless of course you had that ramp system in place, considering that it is considerably higher than the river--a good 10-15 feet of elevation difference.

The only place I know which uses boats as a means of public transit is Venice.

    We ain't no Venice.

YEEEAAAHH....then youre riding on one of the water taxis with like 6 other peeps,.and a really fat lady...and then it starts sliding backwards down the ramp really quickly, and the whole friggin watertaxi capsizes and leaves a bunch of peeps including yerself bobbing in the water for rescue.

i like my plan better with the canal locks, cause it works with fatties too

LOL! Good point Mireaux! Or just an NBA player sitting in the back would cause it to capsize as well.

With the relative flatness of the bottom of the water taxis, and the bigness that conveyors can be, and that hundreds of theme parks around the world have ramps that take large boat fulls of people up log flume rides...it's possible.

All of these ideas are great ones. No really there was a plan, (I thought) to provide a walking trail from the canal to the Oklahoma River. If you look at the bridge to the left of the canal, the bridge has lights on it at the bottom.

its just like when certain parts of major thoroughfares are given memorial dedication to fallen heroes or historic battles: "korean conflict memorial highway" "sgt john doe memorial highway" , etc.

I guess you also can't stand all the names they've given highways around the metro....here's an example or a few....I-35 through Edmond is called Shannon Miller Parkway; I-235/77 south of I-44 is called the Centennial Expressway; SH-74 is commonly known as Hefner Parkway. These named highways will always be exactly what they are--roads.

So what's the big deal about a body of water being called the North Canadian River until it comes close to downtown OKC and being called the Oklahoma River? I love my state too.

They should call the entire North Canadian River the Oklahoma River - I know I read it once but why ARE the 2 rivers the Canadian Rivers (N & S)?
