Thread: Atonement?

  1. Default Atonement?

    What did you all think?

Personally, it was just so-so and I really wanted to like it! I didn't walk out thinking 'wow' what a great movie.

But once again, I was distracted throughout the movie.

I swear it seems every single time I go to the movies lately, I pick the most obnoxious person to sit near. The theater was pretty packed so moving wasn't really an option but I should have .. I get so easily distracted.

Okay, this time it was an Elderly woman! She had on bangled bracelets .. and each and every time she would rattle her popcorn bag her bracelets would jangle.. and then her candy wrapper and I swear.. . she was unzipping her jacket pockets every two seconds and to top it off, she was even burping! omg.

I can take some of this crap at a kid's movie but to have it happen on an adult movie was just unacceptable.

Ha! You and I must go to the same theatre, then. Why some people can't learn how to actually reach in the popcorn back without crunching the paper - in the most tense and heartbreaking moments of a movie - is beyond me.

I try to go to early matinees (before noon) as much as possible. Not only are the prices better, but there is usually much less crowd to deal with.

As for Atonement, I too, was left in a way wanting more. Mind you, it went pretty much page by page along the novel, so those "chunks of time" that seemed missing in the film were missing in the novel, too.

The book, however, really gets into the characters' heads more (as any novel should), especially the character of Briony, so you really understood her motives a lot more clearly. The film makes her seem that she was jealous. And while this kind of factors into it, her motives were much deeper than that.

It certainly was a beautiful film, and I thought the chemistry between Kiera Knightly and James MacAvoy was really phenomenol. The cinematography, though, was also astounding.

In the big scheme of things, however, besides it being an "epic" drama, I felt the story lacked. But again, the novel was the same way. Beautifully written, but somewhat flat story-wise. Just left you wanting more and feeling wholly unsatisfied.

lol.. I've often thought of inventing a noise proof popcorn bag!

What I do is ask for a cardboard drink tray and pour the popcorn into the tray before the movie starts so I don't have to continually reach into the noisy bag... because I'm trying to be considerate, unlike most people!

Count me in on that venture. I was even thinking about that during "Diving Bell" when I had not one, but two bag crunchers, nearby. It was listening to it in stereo. I really wanted to "shhh" one, but obviously didn't.

Maybe we should make a "popcorn etiquette 101" film and submit it to a local contest so they can show it before the previews...

    Ha, ha!

The Kung Fu Panda didn't work .... maybe we should have a go at it!

    Best Movie of the Year

The acting (especially the 3 Briony's and McAvoy), direction, cinematography, score, art direction, costumes... Everything is gloriously perfect. The scene at Dunkirk (some 5-10 minutes all in one shot without cuts) is absolutely stunning. And the ending blew me away. It's such an emotional punch. An utter masterpiece of filmmaking.

    10/10 or A+

    *snooooooooore*

I can't fathom why I agreed to go see this movie. My girlfriend -who is usually a sucker for these types of movies- didn't even get the sniffles. She didn't care for it either, so I know it wasn't just me.

Being a beautiful movie is a big plus, but hey....Battlefield Earth had great special effects you know...And I'm a more dumber person for having sat through the entire thing.
