Dare I say, this is what should be lining up around MBG.
Um, that's where Urbanized lives, so he can give you some insight..
But I agree, more of that please.
Very neat building, but looks like the place is very poorly run: The Aberdeen Ratings, Reviews, Map, Rents, and other Oklahoma City apartments for rent from ApartmentRatings.com
I agree with you 100%. It reminds me of the brick apartments and condos that overlook the Plaza in Kansas City (and can be found everywhere on the East coast).
Really sad to see. When my wife and I were looking to move closer to downtown several years ago this is one of the places we looked at. I loved the way it looked. Glad we didnt move in, now.
I have no personal experience with The Aberdeen, but no apartment building has good reviews online. In my renting years, I lived comfortably in several places that you would have thought were third world sewer drains based on their online reviews.
I have a friend that lives here too and really likes it.
This is true.
The apartment complex I'm living in on the NW side has pretty bad reviews online. Other than a few cosmetic issues in my apartment, the apartment complex is fine.
What happens is people don't read their lease and obligations of fulfilling their end of the lease. The management company calls the renter out on it, the renter gets pissed and decides to post a bad review on every website.
The people who are satisfied have no reason to go and review the place online, because it's not on their mind.
I'll leave a review for my current place (a positive one) when I move out, but a strong majority of people do not find it necessary to leave a review if they have a positive experience.
Yeah I think some of those bad reviews stem from a period about 4-5 years ago when they had a succession of managers and lots of things were falling through the cracks. They now have much more stability there and have done quite a bit in the way of upgrades.
They also had a couple of issues that weren't necessarily foreseeable but that inconvenienced people, including a kitchen fire in the tower that displaced some people and a chiller failure that left folks without A/C for a bit while they had to do some incredibly difficult and expensive repairs.
Overall I like the place. I've had an apartment there for 10 years, and honestly you can't beat the price and convenience to everything that matters downtown. Great highway access to get anywhere in the city quickly, excellent parking convenience, and a fantastic neighborhood that is only getting better.
Let me add - there are 3 separate parts to the Aberdeen - the tower pictured above, some townhomes on the east side, and some 60's era apartments on the north side of the tower.
You'd find it hard to believe if you looked at them, but the row of flats/townhomes to the east of the tower are actually OLDER than the more nondescript units in "the square", which haven't aged as well on the exterior but are actually pretty cool inside. The units east of the tower supposedly won architectural awards at some point.
And it's a bit complicated, but there are also units in the square that many would call townhomes. For instance, open kitchen to living room with fireplace, half-bath under stairs, and an upstairs with two bedrooms and a full bath. Also a ridiculous amount of storage in units in the square, most of which have been heavily remodeled in the past 2-3 years.
What gets me is the rents they are getting due to the rarity of this type of housing, and I can see a lot of transplants wanting something old school urban. Buildings like this in Ohio, Michigan, or Western PA go for $600 a month for 1br, and they are synonymous with old hoods.
If I was moving back to OKC this place would be #1 on my list but only if I could get a tower unit.
The penthouse is pretty sweet (great views, parquet floors), but most everything in the way of appliances and finishes in the tower is pretty long in the tooth.
