Thread: 300

  1. Default 300

Saw this today.. kids saw it twice.. (btw, teenage boys love this movie)... not my cup of tea... violent, graphic and gory.. a lot of fighting scenes of course.

The cinematography was really beautiful though and the choreographed fight scenes were amazing. I liked the soundtrack as well.

For those who like epic battle movies with a lot of detail, a must see. For the rest of us... wait for the DVD.

Read it was mostly image over substance...But still gonna try and get out and see it on the big screen since I am still a teenage dork when it comes to movies!

It was very good. I would disagree that it's style over substance. It deals with Greek themes of honor, hubris, etc, far better than Troy or Alexander were able to. It did have some derivitive aspects mainly taken from things like Lord of the Rings, and one glaring plot cliche, but other than that it's very good. The acting and cinematography especially.

i liked it... for an action movie. i'd also disagree with the image over substance argument.

curious, though... since this screenplay was adapted from a graphic novel which was itself adapted from the traditional tale of the battle of thermopylae... what was the glaring plot cliche? -M

I was just glad that they finally made a film on Sparta. That and I love Ancient Greece and Rome. It would actually be pretty interesting to see a film on ancient societies that doesn't involve warfare. I can't remember seeing a historical movie that wasn't, actually.

    SPOILER

father lets son fight in battle, and freaks when son is killed.

I was hoping it wouldn't go that route, but it did.

right, right... that was pretty contrived and i don't think it's part of the original legendary account of the battle. -M

Yeah, I doubt it is. I thought maybe they'd reverse it, with the father dying instead. Oh well, still a pretty great movie.
