Deep down, many would like to blame violent video games for crimes, when actually the blame lies with the parents. We've had violence in children's entertainment for years. The Smurfs getting their lives threatened by Gargamel shows some violence and that was years ago. Or what about the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fighting off the bad guys? Or GI Joe?
I like violent video games sometimes. I'm a big fan of the Grand Theft Auto series, especially San Andreas. I'm quite skilled with an AK-47
But I wouldn't take one to school and shoot my students. My parents never censored things like that when I was growing up and I'm not homocidal. It all comes down to good parenting skills. Kids need to be able to make the distinction between make-believe (movies, games, music, etc.) and reality, and to do that, they need a good moral compass in the form of good parenting skills.
