    City's southwest may get upgrades

Oklahoma City wants to build a new fire station, a library and make several traffic improvements in its southwestern area.
The southwest sector plan, unveiled last week, is part of a six-part comprehensive look at development and city service improvements in all areas of the city. The southwest sector was the first to be released.

The area is bordered by Gregory Road on the west, the Canadian River on the south and Will Rogers World Airport and Lake Overholser to the northwest.

One of the highlights is the plan to build a "western outer loop" connecting the Kilpatrick Turnpike with Airport Road. Planned improvements at Interstate 40 and Morgan Road and additional exits along I-40 are also mentioned.

The city invited residents, developers, school officials and other stakeholders to a series of meetings and asked for volunteers to help draft the plan. It took the group about eight months to come up with a finished product.

Residential development is one of the key issues mentioned in the plan. The area currently has about 14,000 houses or apartments. That number is expected to more than double by 2030.

The plan projects 17,700 new houses or apartments will be built in the next 25 years, bringing residential development to the north and west borders of Mustang and south all the way to the Canadian River.

To make way for that development and to improve the quality of life for residents, the city wants to build a new fire station near SW 104 and Council Road. The plan also calls for extending city water lines into many areas now using well water, and expanding the sewer system.

The city also wants to build a new branch library somewhere in the southwest sector.

Meetings already have begun for the southeast sector plan, and the city is still accepting volunteers who want to be on the planning team. To volunteer, call Aubrey Hammontree at 297-1629.
