I remember seeing a presentation like that but it was a while ago...

After a quick search of the citie's open records site the minutes indicate it was the March 22 2011, looks like you might want to skim to the end of the video since it was the last item, if you want to watch it yourself.

So this isnt anything like a real water park, kinda like white water, or splashtown etc, is this just a regular city park pool with some slides like earlywine we are talking about? or a real water theme park?

  4. Default Re: New Waterpark to be built

Yeah, I'd like to know just exactly what kind of water park. Just a typical city water park with a slide or two (like MWC) is a waste of money. A real water park that can potentially be better than White Water Bay...bigger...would be worth it, but such close locations between the two could make it really competitive. White Water Bay is crammed in a very tight...limited space (their fault for not buying the land just to the west and now useless buildings took it).

Yeah, this is just going to be a city pool with some slides, similar to Pelican Bay in Edmond. We already have an amusement water park: it's called White Water Bay!

He said the budget was half a mil, no way it would be anything more than a city spray grounds and pool for that coin

Why not? As far as I know, there aren't any public swimming pools on that side of town. I'm all about more public swimming pools. We only have two in OKC; that is ridiculous for a city this size.

A city water park isn't really an investment, Reno. It's a quality of life issue and NE OKC deserves that as much as any area.

Umm pretty sure, that this city has been REMOVING pools; so sounds to me they don't really care if there are only 2 pools.

There are three pools located in NE OKC, 2 outdoor and the only indoor pool operated by the Parks Department.

Only two pools, you need a new information source, theres 7 pools and 16 spraygrounds/splashpads.

So if I interpret what I heard from that meeting. no money to keep Macklanburg open since it has an operating spray pad. Minnis stays open until they have an operating spraypad. research to open a new family aquatic center which falls in line with a conversation I overheard already....open a family aquatic center on land near the zoo and softball hall of fame. Keep Woodson open as a free pool with the possibility of adding some additional features to make it more attractive to patrons. Leaving the city with 4 operating pools. How can I get my hands on the Aquatics Master Plan that they created however many years ago (6-10yrs) Would this be public record?

Thanks for the information. You're right, my knowledge of this was obviously skewed.

Pools are a huge money pit.. They loose millions of dollars due to staffing and chemicals.. Spray parks are a much better alternative health and economically.

They are more economical, but hardly anyone over 10 is going to a spray park unless they are taking a kid their. Swimming is a healthier activity if people were actively using it as a form of exercise, plus given it's low impact can be utilized by a wide age range, a spray park is a better health alternative compared to what just siting around.

YES YOU ARE RIGHT, but how many people at a public pool do you see excercise, i.e earlywine, woodson, will rogers, These places are just a nice dumping ground for parents who do not want to watch there kids during the summer.

So uninformed, don't know where to start. You don't have to exercise, the act of swimming is a good means of exercise.

I know some people love to shoot down the idea of a pool based on money. By that same argument a park as nothing more than a grassy area with a playground on it is nothing more than a money pit. you have to maintain it so you are paying for mowing and upkeep on the equipment etc., etc. Recreation is about quality of life not making money. Yes Will Rogers and Earlywine pools pay for themselves barely but that isnt the point. The point is offering the kids over 10yrs old something to do besides run through a garden hose. As for exercise I guarantee that the kids I see playing at the pool are exercising. They may not be swimming laps but they are all over that pool. jumping off the diving boards swimming to the side going back and doing it over and over again, not too mention just playing in the pool. they are active the entire time they are there.

Didn't hear you complain about Project 180 being a money pit, is it becasue it's benefiting property you own. Some may consuder Project 180 a money pit, most of the streets being replaced were OK, but are being ripped up and replaced.

Can you imagine the reaction if a couple middle aged folks started hanging out at a spray park...

They would draw almost as much negative attention as the Westboro folk showing up at a military funeral, perhaps more. And, without the police protection the WBC has.

Does that mean you think Project 180 should not have happened or that you won't benefit in the future?

As a matter of fact I have, I own several peices of rental property (residential and commercial) and I have experienced road construction problems several times. I've had property sit vacant because I couldn't find renters that were able/willing to deal with delays due to ongoing construction. I think so...
