Thread: Sriracha shortage

  1. #1

    Default Sriracha shortage

I like spicy food... A lot.

I go through a big bottle of Sriracha in a couple of months and really like their garlic chili sauce as well.

But I can't find either of those products anywhere! Turns out there is a shortage and people like me have probably been hoarding it out of fear of running out.

Has anybody had success, either locally or online?

I'm down to my last bottle.

    I have about 2/3rds of a bottle..... I'll sell it for $1000 a 1/3.

I seem to recall seeing an abundance out here in LA. I’ll double check tonight when I hit up Ralph’s. I wouldn’t mind sending you some if I find it but I wouldn’t know how to properly package it.

Is the shortage affecting all "sriracha" makers, or just Huy Fong Sriracha.

I feel like I just bought a bottle, but it wasn't Huy Fong.

Mainly Huy Fong but it's hard to find under any label.

Evidently, there is a big chili pepper shortage due to the drought in Mexico.

IIRC, there was a shortage a few years ago when the factory was shut down due to air quality and emissions concerns.

It's been unobtanium for me from the usual American supermarkets, but they had a decent stock of it at World Fresh International Market (SW 104th and S Penn) last time I was there a couple of weeks ago - both Huy Fong and another brand I can't remember right now.

Surely it's findable at one of the tons of Asian markets/convenience stores along and near Classen?

Seems to be plenty of it available under various brands if you just google "Sriracha".

Until you go to try and order it and all the links say "unavailable".

Huy Fong was discontinued by OK's largest distributor (AWG) when they started having the factory issue several years ago. Most AWG stores (Homeland, Crest, Pruetts) should be carrying Sky Valley and Roland Sriracha to substitute for now. But the chili issues in Mexico caused by drought will cause issues for all brands in the near future.

Just added this to my cart on amazon. Seems to be available.

    https://www.amazon.com/Authentic-Del...4aAvzJEALw_wcB

This says available for pickup at WMNM on 63rd and Mac Arthur.

    https://www.walmart.com/ip/TABASCO-B...B&gclsrc=aw.ds

I realize it's not your preferred brand but these are available. Don't know enough about it really.

Aldi is where we usually get it.

OK KO in MWC carries it as well.

    Aldi is a good idea.

The few places that have it online are charging 3-4x the typical price.

i thought world fresh on sw 104th and penn was a good suggestion... i'm pretty sure that i saw some there around 3 weeks ago, but maybe that's before the shortage hit. super cao nguyen would be less of a drive and would be worth checking out... assuming that you haven't done that already.

Uptown had Sky Valley and another brand yesterday, but not the Huy Fong brand.

I got some yesterday at the Asian Supermarket on Classen near NW 23rd. Limit 1 per customer and I think it was $8.

Thanks for all the ideas... I'm sure I can hunt some down.

Today, I was very happy to see the Yellow Bird Habenero sauce in stock at Costco and at a good price. I bought 4 bottles.

There is now a PF Chang's Gochujang hot sauce at Wal-Mart that is very, very good and you might find it an acceptable replacement to Sriracha.

    Thanks!

I'll try it. I like gochujang; I order it at Chick n Beer all the time.

It seems that it is more a Huy Fong shortage than a siracha shortage. Yellow Bird is available at local Wal Marts as well as other brands.

Super Cao Nguyen has them in stock with a limit of 12 per customer and no mark up.
