Thread: Legacy Trails

  1. #1

    OU Legacy Trails

I am pretty sure that I recently an article about the extension of the legacy park trails (the one that runs parallel to the tracks near downtown) that would go all the way up northward through Robinson and then extend pretty far south (correct me if I am wrong on this whole subject). I don't remember how far south though. It would be great to have a walking/bike trail that utilizes this corridor. Connecting OU's campus to downtown and further north with all of the apartment complexes near the tracks down south would be fantastic.

I don't know how far south it will extend but I've worked on projects that it will pass through all the way to Tecumseh Rd to the north.

They're working on the extension from Main St. south to Boyd St. along Duffy right now aren't they?

Yep, along Jenkins I think. I'm trying to find the article for you.

It would be great to see this trail also extended south along the tracks to the Duck Pond and Lindsey, and then eventually south down to Constitution.

Norman needs more multi-purpose trails like this winding through its greenways. Isn't there a long range plan to build a trail along Imhoff Creek from Lions Park southward?

I think the planned trail begins at Andrews Park, further north. I believe it is a part of the Storm Water Master Plan. It requires the removal of quite a few homes all along the creek. At one point my house was the last one standing on the south side of West Brooks until way up toward Berry Road, and I live just west of Pickard. They added a few back in later planning. They are/were planning two detention ponds in Andrews Park, removing Front Street and relocating the Skate Park.

It would be really great if any kind of multi-use trail along the creek greenbelt also includes restoring the natural habitat in areas where it has been destroyed such as near Lindsey. This report by the Sierra Club highlights some of the damage that has been done, and includes ideas to fix it. Couple that with a jogging/bike trail and it could be a really nice amenity for central Norman.

It would be pretty cool to have the trail running along the tracks running through Norman...that would easily connect to most of the apartment complexes where students live on east/SE of campus.

Yes, this would be awesome. I would run/bike this a lot. Tons of runners would flock to something like that, just like they do to Sutton. Norman needs more non-cement trails.
