General Motors has decided NOT to cancel the swing shift at the Oklahoma City assembally plant.

This is great news, and says the ralley earlier has worked. No word on if this is a temporary decision or permanant.

That's excellent news. This means there's a lesser chance they'll consider leaving the city in the near future.

Since we now have a diversified economy, if GM were to leave someday, it wouldn't be a huge blow, but they do add to our economy (high paying manufacturing jobs) and I think we should do everything to keep them here.

In a way, I kind of wish they wouldn't have retooled the plant for small SUV's though. I think we kind of had our own market down here for manufacturing Malibu's, a line that stays pretty stable and doesn't fall and rise in the changing SUV market.

ya, but they could also use the tooling to make cars in the future. I think automation was good move for OKC because its difficult to close an automated plant due to the huge investment (sunk cost).

I think it is much less likely that they will close OKC in the future due to the automation! That does not mean they will not lay-off or have temporary shutdown. That's a small price to pay for (as Patrick stated) the promise of a diversified economy in the city.
