“LITTLE LIBRARY” COMING TO PERLE MESTA PARK! by JB Schuelein
The Central Oklahoma Chapter of the American Institute of Architects has challenged its members to design
and build “little free libraries” across the metro area – and we hope Perle Mesta Park will be among the first to
have one.
The local chapter of the AIA is working with the Neighborhood Alliance and the Little Free Library organization
to establish this program in the Oklahoma City area. Little Free Library’s mission is to promote literacy and the
love of reading by building free book exchanges worldwide. They hope to build more than 2,500 little libraries.
Mesta Park, the Plaza District, Cleveland neighborhood and Urban Neighbors are among the first
neighborhoods to express an interest in the program and are partnering with local architects in the design and
construction of the libraries for their specific locations. Mesta Park is fortunate to partner with Butzer-Gardner
Architects, a firm with neighborhood roots that is gaining national recognition for their design work that is
changing the face of Oklahoma City.
The deadline for submitting the completed libraries is April 1st. They will be displayed at JRB Gallery in May
before they are installed. Full Circle Bookstore and Barnes and Noble have agreed to donate books to initially
stock the libraries. It will then be up to neighborhood stewards to maintain them in the future. Neighborhood
residents and visitors to the park are welcome and encouraged to pick up a book and drop one off that you’re
willing to donate. Watch for more details in future editions of the newsletter.
