Thread: Angel Food - Lots of good food cheap!

  1. Default Angel Food - Lots of good food cheap!

I thought I would share this wonderful ministry for anyone who has never heard of it and is in need or knows someone in need of quality food for a good price.

Prospect Missionary Baptist Church and Larry Hutton Ministries sponsor "Angel Food."

We personally pay for a few senior friends on a fixed budget and one single mom to receive this each month.

I've eaten several of the items (we grilled steaks at a friends house last month after delivering food to her) and they are excellent.

From their literature: Once a month you (or someone you want to help) can be blessed with fresh meat items at an extremely low price! And this is not "day old" or "outdated" food. No application. No qualifications. No limits on the quantity purchased.

    *****

Basically, you pre-pay $25 each month and you get a huge amount of really good food. A unit is $25 and can feed 1 adult for about a month, or a family of four for a week. Excellent for families on a tight budget.

Here is what $25 gets you in May
    (4) 5oz. New York Strip Steaks
    (1) 4lb. Chicken Thighs
    (1) 40oz Beef & Been Burritos
    (1) 28oz Banquet Beef & Noodle Dinner
    (1) 2lb Breaded Frying Chicken
    (1) 1lb Ground Beef
    (1) 12oz Pepperoni Pizza Sticks
    (1) 2lb Popcorn Chicken
    (1) 1lb Bean Soup Mix
    (1) 8oz Biscuit Mix
    (1) 7.5oz Mac & Cheese
    (1) 12ct Corn Tortillas
    (1) 26oz Pasta Sauce
    (1) 16oz Pasta
    (1) 24oz Hash Brown Potatoes
    (1) 16oz Mixed Vegetables
    (1) Desert Item

    You can also add the following;
    (1) 2lb Breaded Shrimp
    (4) 8oz T-Bone Steaks
    $18

    (1) 10lb Chicken Tenders $17

    (2) 8oz Ribeye Steaks
    (2) 8oz Sirloin Steaks
    (4) 4oz Bacon Wrapped Pork Filets
    (4) 4oz Steak Burgers
    (1) 1lb Italian Sausage
    $18

They accept Cash and Food Stamp Cards.

This is an outstanding ministry that my wife and I participate in every month. We always order a regular $25 box, and then add one of the specials. The food is of excellent quality, and is at a great price.

As a matter of fact, Saturday, they are taking orders at the Bethesda Church, located at 3101 SW.89th, from 9 am til noon. We will be there sometime in the morning to order ours.

I appreciate BailJumper bringing this up, because it is an outstanding ministry that helps many people.

We are ordering ours tomorrow too (last day to order for the May 26th delivery date). While we don't order for ourselves every month, we do order May-Aug while the kiddos are home. They love the food and it is an excellent value.

Good post Bailjumper, my wife and I have participated in this ministry several months. It really is a good ministry and helps people get some basic staples and food items at a reduced cost.

Yeah, our church, Northwest Baptist Church (actually our Hispanic church, Iglesia Bautista Peniel), participates in this as well. 25 bucks is a bargain for all the food you get. There's no way I could get all of that food at the grocery store for that price. My only complaint is that much of the food is fried....I actually bought a fryer for that purpose, but it isn't very healthy.

Ohhhhh there is nothing cooler than those restaurant style friers! It opened a whole new Sam's Club shopping experience for me! But, alas, moderation, moderation, moderation.

ok... so i don't get this whole angelfood thing... are these $25 dollar packages designed to help out low-income families or does selling these $25 dollar packages provide revenue so that this group can help out low-income families? -M

We also participate. My former church ( a small country town) would buy 4 boxes and redistribute to those in need. My current church is order/pickup location.

I think it's primarily to help low income families by providing cheap groceries. My mom is heavily involved with this ministry at Iglesia Bautista Peniel and they primarily serve low-income families from the neighborhood. They even take food stamps.

Mostly low income families, but anyone can participate...the more the merrier. They are able to get the price that low because Angle Food Ministries buys in bulk and distributes the food to various churches around the country.

Yeah, I only use ours a few times each month, but it's so nice when I use it. And since I use vegetable oil, it isn't all that bad.

I think there is a stigmatism that makes mostly low income families participate. But actually it helps when everyone participates. Volume is what keeps the prices down for everyone.

I know a few people that order the food but have a thrid party pick it up because they are afraid they will look homeless.

Of course, I'm the guy who loves to find bargains at Good Will, garage sales and ding and dent depots!

We've participated for others and for ourselves for some time in our own community. I can't really grasp the notion that someone driving by on either order or pickup day might consider a participant to be destitute, or even notice themf or that matter. As far as the folks in line or the ever so gracious volunteers, at least at the location we use, perish the thought, as it would never close their mind to be anything but wonderous and polite.

Besides, saving some coin is as every day American, at minimum, as apple pie. Folks seem to have no qualms about using a buy one get one coupon at the supermarket or when going to the movies, a play or dining out. There are whole industries that cater to that desire.

Folks seem to buy electronics on sale, even if it means they delay gratification until a sale arrives.

Folks flock to Turkey weekend sales and end of season sales, and often forfeit all semblence of manners while they are there so eager are they to score the item of choice.

And who pays retail for a car, or a suit of clothes, or even a jacket?

I can't say it ever crossed my mind that the mere act of saving a fair piece of change on food could be considered an act of desperation. And while I certainly do not wish to belittle folks whose wiring permits them to hold such a concern, I can't join in the concern, even though I've generally considered myself to have way more pride molecules than I probably oughta have.

It doesn't take away from those who might be really needing it though... does it?

They do have enough to go around, right?

Absotively, posilutely. The process works thusly:

At the announced times (three at the location we use) there are order periods. Folks come in, order what they want for themselves, or others, or both, and pay at the time.

Then, on the appointed pickup day, folks come in, with paid up receipt ticket in hand, and volunteers load the baskets folks bring with them.

There's always as much as was ordered. Also, sometimes folks come in on order day, place several orders, pay for same, but do not pick up all orders. The sponsor organization can distribute such 'gifted' orders as it sees fit to best fill known needs.

You have to order your box ahead of time, so it doesn't take away from anyone.

Yes thank you! My aunt has crippling Rheumatoid Arthritis and can't work .. she is on SSI disability. She called me last night in tears ... apparently her food stamp allotment went from $96 a month to $24 a month because she gets money for being disabled ( something like that) but there is no way she can live on that.. so I want to go set her up and buy her this every month to help her.

Here is a link to their website. I like to go look at it because it gives the menu a month in advance so I know how many boxes I want this month. Sometimes the menu isn't very good so I get 2 boxes one month and skip the next. This is one of the benefits we receive as an employee of Hobby Lobby. David Green pays for half of our food, up to two boxes. We can get as many as we want beyond the initial 2 boxes but we are charged the full price for them. We order it through work and it is deducted from our paycheck. It's really nice.

Something along the same lines is Heartland SHARE (self help and resource exchange). We volunteered for them for years. It seems like their food is a little higher quality, and they have LOTS of fresh fruits and vegetable, which I don't think Angel Food has.

Thank you! I've been looking for that. I like to get their produce and pantry box. And yes, their food is a little better quality. I wish I could get Hob Lob to change over to them.
