How Cities And States Are Fighting Veteran Homelessness
Good article. My nephew is a Marine Vet and now works in the VA as a liason to the administration after all the problems VA encountered over past few years. We were in DC a couple of weeks ago and took a tour and got some interesting insight into all the various programs and things they are trying to change including at the local and state level.
The Homeless Alliance in OKC is doing great work in this issue. Housing first is usually the best policy but only if followed up with all the other services needed by the veteran.
Salt Lake City figured out it was an economic issue also, it costs less to house homeless people in general - they saved $8000 per person by housing them and providing the support needed to get them on their feet again as opposed to leaving them with only temporary solutions or leaving them to the criminal justice system.
But housing first isn't always a silver bullet solution either. That's why it is good to see a veritable task force of organizations both public and private involved in The Homeless Alliance outreach to OKC homeless veterans.
