Thought the food I got on OKCTalk night was a bit underwhelming. Seemed like everything had been sitting out for a bit. This is in contrast to a time I went there in April when I sat on the patio and everything was incredibly top notch. I really love the vibe of this place, especially the patio. I imagine the average experience is somewhere between pretty good to really good. I hope they can push the average experience toward really good to great.
That Lefty's Mac & Cheese does sounds pretty good, I'll have to make another trip in to try it.
We finally got a chance to try it for lunch. So, keep in mind that are opinions are based on take out. Great presentations in the box for the sandwiches. Not sure how much heat they hold in though. I had the chicken philly. I would not order it again as I prefer my Phillies to be gooey with the cheese melted into the entire innards of meat and peppers. My philly was a little on the small side and was layered with the cheese put on top. The cheese appeared only melted to the point of the heat from the sandwich and not from any other heat source. Two of my staff members ordered the club sandwich and were very impressed with the size and the flavor. I will probably try that next time. The sandwiches come with what appears to be homemade potato chips and they were tasty.
We ordered the Fire mac and cheese as well as the cheese fries. The fire mac and cheese was excellent. Imagine pasta tossed into queso with some meat and fire added. One staff member said she will get that next time as her main entrée. The group was underwhelmed with the cheese fries. The fries were excellent but was lacking on cheese and once again...cheese appeared to be barely melted over the top to the point that it may just had been tossed on the hot fries only and not put under anything to melt the cheese.
Nothing was bad. The items we liked were really liked and the other items weren't bad...just not prepared in style we like. The overall opinion was that it would be added to our rotation when we want sandwiches or mac and cheese. Also, I know some of said it appeared pricy, I thought it was good value for the money when looking at the quality of what was served.
Slaughter's and WSKY have new chefs and new menus:
Oklahoma City's Deep Deuce welcomes a pair of aces to reinforce restaurants | News OK
Here is a great little story about Slaughter's...
I was in there last week on my recent visit and happened to strike up a conversation with a guy who said he was traveling through OKC with two others... That they were driving from California to Tennessee (where one of the group was moving) and made a specific point to stop in OKC.
They were staying someplace near I-40 and Meridian but learned about Bricktown and Slaughter's on Yelp. so they parked somewhere in BT and walked all around before landing at Slaughter's.
He invited me to join the group which I did and they all *raved* about OKC. Said they had heard good things but in person the whole downtown area was more impressive than they had expected.
Similarly, I have a friend out here who is an opera singer (of all things) and when I mentioned I was from OKC he said he had given a couple of performances in town and absolutely loved the downtown area. Think he stayed somewhere in Bricktown. This coming from an Aussie who is not one for false praise.
Of course, we still have a long way to go and lots more in the pipeline but I think we're to the point now that visitors are going to come away pretty impressed.
Last week there was a national convention of rural water association managers at the Cox Center, about 1700 of them. I spoke with quite a few. One in particular stood out, a guy who was running from his hotel over to the Ice House to check it out and see if it was a good place to take his wife later. I was hanging out waiting for someone in front of the waterfall in MBG at Robinson and Sheridan, and he randomly asked if I lived here, only because he wanted so badly to tell someone from OKC how awesome the city is. He and his wife had arrived the night before and spent a little time in Bricktown, and they had gone through the memorial museum. He was just bubbling over about how blown away they were by how nice, clean, friendly, convenient, walkable and entertainment-laden our downtown is. He was pretty overwhelmed by it.
People have low expectations before they get here, sure, but I have now heard unsolicited comments like this many, many hundreds of times, and often from people who live in places that we think of as way more exciting than OKC. The experience you describe is pretty common these days, Pete.
I know we are getting off subject here but...
Do we still have the roving ambassadors downtown? People that were out and about to help tourists?
In all may walking around I saw lots of obvious tourists milling about and I wanted to stop and help all of them.
Yes. But also we have in addition to that the DowntownOKC, Inc Guides.
Saw the pic of their falafel veggie burger - looks solid! We'll have to go back. Went shortly after they opened and have rarely been back since, mostly because the food was just horrific. Soggy buns on our sandwiches, mac-n-cheese was way overcooked, undersalted, and underwhelming. Solid beer selection though so we shall give it another shot!

I've eaten at Slaughter's 3 times and loved my sandwich each time.
But with the new chef and menu, it looks even better.
This is one of my favorite spots in OKC.
Definitely give them another try. I had great food both times.
Been there once, loved it. I'm waiting for my friend from London to come over and we will definitely eat there again.

Finally got over here yesterday. I had the Cuban Press which was great. My wife was going to get one of the Mac & Cheese options, but decided on the Uncle Joe's Lunch Box; she can't turn down a cookie! She enjoyed it. I had a bit of the grilled cheese; seemed sufficiently cheesy, but kind of boring. The cheese fries were pretty good as well.
I had a lot of difficulty choosing what sandwich I wanted, so I'll clearly need to return a few more times to try the ones I missed out on this time. It'll definitely be added to the list of places we should return to.
I've had several of their sandwiches and they have all been outstanding.
I keep meaning to try their mac & cheese varieties but I can never not order one of those great sandwiches.
Get both, take the mac & cheese home, the pasta stands up well and doesn't just disintegrate if you reheat it on low on either the stovetop or microwave - we had the BBQ version and it reheated nicely (a little too sweet for me, but *huge* hunks of pork in it, so that was nice).
They have started to have jazz nights here in keeping with the heritage of the district. Other places (Urban's Johnnies, Aloft) will soon follow suit.
I'm here now and it's a great vibe and a good crowd. This place is highly underrated. I find myself here as much as anywhere since I've been back.
This weekend is their 1 year anniversary. It is Saturday night Dec 19 and they are doing a local beer tap takeover. Their FB page says that they will have over 30 local beers on tap including many limited runs and hard to get releases.

I'll be there! I believe Urbanized is going to make the scene as well.
Had their brunch burrito today with gravy.....sinful and delicious!!!
Went tonight and as with every Tuesday, it was Jazz Night.
Such a great vibe! Really good group of musicians and the place completely filled up, but not in an annoying, crowded way but in a high-energy, fun way.
I've really grown to love this place and pleased to see it's popularity continuously expanding.
I was there with my LOYAL class tonight. I wish I would have seen you. It was my first time there. It's a cool place.
