If it is the 89ers then that is not even a new name and branding

New in this context obviously means different or changed from what it most recently was. When they went from RedHawks to Dodgers, that wasn’t exactly new as everything was based off of the Los Angeles Dodgers namesake, but it was still new to the AAA team based in Oklahoma City.

the ONLY reason to drop OKC Dodgers is if they were going to bring back the OKC 89ers. I could also see the OKC Lightning possibly work but to me it sounds like a pro womens team of sorts (no offense to anyone).

RedHawks was the WORST name for an OKC team. Energy is taken, so why change from the big league if we're not going to resurrect our roots/founding with 89ers??

That wasn’t the ONLY reason, and in fact it wasn’t the reason at all for the move.

The change was because - while the Dodgers name had some significant marketing advantages - use of the Dodgers name and marks was very limiting from a promotional standpoint. The team had to ask permission of the home club for pretty much anything they wanted to do that included the name, and there was always a risk that the LA Dodgers might say no to something the OKC team thought was a good idea locally. This move allows the OKC organization far more flexibility and marketing creativity in the long run.

And to reiterate, it won’t be the 89ers. I’m fond of that name myself, but as times and perspectives change, it brings cultural baggage that wouldn’t be worth constantly having to defend publicly. I wasn’t privy to the team’s internal marketing discussions, but - assuming it was considered - I’m sure that’s why they chose not to move forward with that. To use a currently-popular idiom: the juice wouldn’t be worth the squeeze.

Fully agree with this statement, why even risk it if your the marketing department? Easier to leave a name referencing the land run in the past then having to defend the name every time it comes up in a cultural discussion.

They still embraced 89ers hard, including a weekly 89ers night as well as selling merch. I guess I don’t understand why calling them that full time instead of once a week is that big of a deal.
