Thread: Cannabis

As the FDA/DEA Kratom debacle proves, activism and communication with lawmakers actually has results when enough people band together for a common cause. "Endless pressure, applied endlessly".

Remember, the most deadly drugs in the US come out of your friendly neighborhood Walgreens and CVS! (or any other pharmacy).

On the ballot for 2018. If you care at all about having medical marijuana in Oklahoma, even if it's just for the tax revenue, make sure you are registered to vote. This is big.

    Agreed!

should have already been voted on but better late than never. By the time we have legalization the state will have really missed out on some serious revenue. This state needed the revenue long ago.

I'm not sure how significant the revenue will be but every drop in the bucket is good.

    Are other prescription drugs taxed?

Prescription drugs are not, but this wouldn't be a prescription drug. Not covered by insurance, and you can't turn in expenses for it on your FSA. You get a license to buy, but it's not prescribed. There's a difference.

But any tax revenue will be eaten up when Republicans resume cutting the income tax.

Interesting distinction. I would assume because it is illegal at the federal level?

Correct, nor is it approved for medical use by the FDA. There are synthetic THC medications that can be prescribed by doctors for cancer patients and such.

We should put both measures on the 2018 ballot. Let the voters decide.

Separate measures for the use of Medical (Cannabis oil) & recreational marijuana (county option). Laws that govern operational use of a vehicle or motor cycle (impaired) should continue to be in force.

We should have enough information on Colorado's 2012 legalization come 2018 (6 years) to allow voters to make that decision.

The 2018 legislature should be lobbied to do that, but doubt most members will be advanced enough by then to take rec marijuana legalization seriously. In addition, 2018 is an election year. Leading legislators would NOT want to touch it, but they're welcomed to surprise me. Going the petition route to do it is too risky to succeed, especially if making a constitutional change is the goal, if not enough money can be raised to pay signature takers.

I would think that an out of state company would have great incentive to fund a campaign to make it legal/medical in other states. Influence public opinion, then open a new business in the state to provide their expertise and cash in on economies of scale. People forget that not only would their be tax revenue from the sale, many businesses would be created to grow, market, sell, etc. We need the jobs!

I have a feeling that legal recreational marijuana in Oklahoma is going to be like the ban on tattoos and 3.2 beer. It will come decades after the rest of the country has moved on and most people will be surprised that its still illegal in places. I also think the national momentum to legalize will and actually already is slowing down due to the Trump era. I do think one of the states bordering and easily accessible from Oklahoma will legalize within the next 10-15 years. Whether that will be Texas, Kansas, Missouri, or Arkansas I am not sure but I will be shocked if it doesn't happen. The question then is how will Oklahoma respond?

I do think a county option for legal recreational marijuana would be a good idea. Treat it like many Bible Belt states treated alcohol after prohibition was repealed. There are many states that still have completely dry counties to this day. Unfortunately I think the state is still a good ways off from that. Hopefully medical marijuana will be legalized in 2018.

With OK ranking so high in opiate abuse, you'd think our lawmakers would prefer that there is some alternative options for paint treatment. Glad we'll at least get to vote on it. Due to our abysmal voter turnout, I would actually think there is a better chance to tip the vote in the favor of medical if there is enough activism. If the 18-34 year demo can show up in respectable numbers, I bet it would be a landslide. In my experience, practically every single person that is my age feels that it is beyond idiotic to keep MJ illegal. The only ones who don't think it should be legal are typically 60+ and have never tried it.

Start spreading the word. This train of thought "oh, it will be forever until it happens here is exactly what keeps it illegal. Mobilize enough influencers and have them REGISTER to vote. I am shocked at how many millennials aren't even registered to vote.

Our lawmakers (with a very few exceptions) will *never* think that way, the prevailing attitude among them is still the old "Reefer Madness" BS that is completely untrue and filled with lies, lies, and more lies. Of course, it's just fine to get blasted-drunk on alcohol, even though it's magnitudes worse in its mental *and* physical effects than marijuana (nobody has *ever* fatally overdosed on marijuana, for example)...

If you felt the same way after legalizing lotteries and casinos were rejected at the polls during the mid 1990s, you were proven wrong. The 1994 vote on legalizing lotteries was rejected in all but 3 counties.

And, like opiates, alcohol withdrawal will kill you. One of the rare addictions that stopping can be worse than continuing.

Alcohol is one of the big things for me in that argument for me when I speak in favor of legalization.

I don't have a lot of arguments for the benefits of pot. But if alcohol is legal there really isn't much reason why pot shouldn't be.

Mary Fallin just tweeted that they are considering putting the Medical vote on the JUNE primary or the General election in November. I almost wonder if there would be a better chance of it passing in June since a smaller amount of voters could have a bigger impact... thoughts?

Special elections or Primaries with lower turnout can benefit those working for an issue, but I feel like this would pass in either election.

I will never quite understand why some would oppose it but I can promise you there will be a bunch that do.
