Thread: The New I-40 (Construction Updates)

  1. Default Re: The New I-40 (Construction Updates)

Just stumbled on this. Haven't been to AbandonedOK in a long time. I think they did better photos. I only had an hour (ended up taking an hour and a half) clocked out for a long lunch and had to go back to work or I would have stayed longer.

I think those huge street markers on the access roads are safety hazards and should be moved or removed all together. For example, take the Penn exit, west bound, when you get to the intersection, you cannot see northbound traffic.

some other issues. the run up lanes disappear only to reappear as exit lanes. Would be better to have soling lane, entrance to exit.

When will additional entrances & exits be added? Looks pretty congested. For example, Shields is the only DT exit, no exit or entrance for May ave.

That sculpture on the walking bridge has to go. it's really ugly and won't improve over time.

About 8 months to a year for a on-ramp from Villa(Agnew). There's never going to be any ramps leading directly to and from May, but there's a frontage road leading directly to May from Agnew that wasn't there before.

About a year also for the ramps leading to and from I-40 to the old I-40/(boulevard) to be completed also. This will allow the off-ramps leading to Reno and Sheridan to be restored along with the on-ramp from Sheridan.

Specifically, I was just referring to your last sentence. I know the sculpture is open to subjective opinion, but I am just getting sick of people saying that the bridge was a waste of money and is ugly. There is nothing around it yet and it will be permanently lit within the next couple of months. Give it time...

The pedestrian bridge was a federal requirement, and this is the design that won a city-sponsored contest.

I am good with a walking bridge. It's just the sculpture is ugly and will look worse when the city skimps on on maintenance and gets run down. The dang nearly caused an accident when first seen.

I thought you were criticizing my vision due to my statement concerned those huge markers that are a traffic hazard. Those things will have to go. They should've never been put up. No doubt the city won't do anything until many people are injured in accidents. They need to go now. Perhaps some mirrors will help?

you miss my point. the first time you see it, it is big distraction. Cars were braking and wandering lanes. It's not a permanent hazrd, except for folks that haven't driven here before.

The big problem is those huge markers.

BTw - the sculpture is ugly & never will be mistaken for "art". I am all for civic art projects. this fails in all accounts.

Apparently your wrong. We wouldn't have long threads debating how "nice" or "ugly" something looks if your first statement was true. Just look at the Skydance thread or Stage Center thread.

I could see arguing that the price paid was too high or that you do not like the design, but it seems far better visually than any of the other Oklahoma pedestrian bridges over the interstate.

well screw the sculpture. Love it or hate it.

Those damned street markers on Penn exit are dangerous. in fact I'd rather have more exits and access with full lanes in between. Perhaps double lane entrances. I think the whole decoration is too clever by half.

apparently I'm right, thank you. I always thought the Stage Center actually "worked"- it's functional. too bad the guy with skycraper wants it gone. and of course if he wants it gone, it will go. That's what happened to SFS (where I spent many Friday nites)

Looks as if you're shooting for the 'ignore button' in record time.

It wouldn't be art if everyone liked it.

Your use of absolutes like never and "fails in all accounts" in the context of discussing art is obviously incorrect when someone else disagrees with you. LOL

Sorry, but if the Stage Center depended on its functionality alone to survive it would have been demolished a long time ago. Newer theaters are a lot more functional. Its the artistic and nostalgic debate which was what kept it alive.

But, now were getting off topic.

I liked all the indivisual stages and walkways. seemed quite functional

anyway, those street makers on Penn, bad news.

Not clear what "markers" are you talking about? The answer to that may answer this one, but I will go ahead...what makes them dangerous?

they are huge and block the view of traffic from intersection. Take the westbound Penn exit, you can't see the the Northbound traffic on Penn at the intersection.

I can't believe I'm the first to post this.

"We hope to have a portion from Western to the west open by the end of 2012 also"

This will eliminate a big chuck of the access problems. Just get off at Reno or Sheridan. Of course, people will complain now about not having enough ramps and would rather have more, less safe ramps even though they will become largely redundant two years from now.

I love the bridge and thought it was art, but I'm glad to get on here and learn otherwise. LOL.

Seriously, if you have trouble driving under that bridge safely you should have your license revoked. Pathetic excuse.

I've been through there since the opening twice daily during the so called rush hour and have not seen a problem yet.

What is going on with the westbound may ave bridge? The older "temporary" bridges are 2 separate bridges with a 5' Gap or so between them. Will this gap be joined and barricades removed or will both of these be torn down and a new one built?

Yes and no, they will add on to that northern bridge over May that was built a few years ago. The old "temporary" eastbound bridge will be demolished which is what remains of the original westbound bridge.
