do we need another 'my two cents' segment?
seriously, you realize oklahoma means red man & there's 100's of town names named from similar native american names? you realize the short-sidedness is what will keep us in the little corner the rest of the country painted us in. the only way out is to define ourselves by taking advantage of our own history & use it for something positive. it's people like that are so afraid of outsiders making fun of us that they'd rather not anything be used that holds any kind of historical meaning. the same attitude is reached when they fast-tracked the name of Oklahoma City to be used in the team name. the name that's so good it had to be used twice (ie. water bill comes to mind anytime capital & state are used in same sentence of course). you do see the irony our state's capital, of which i live, is borrowed after the state yet we must make sure the NBA team is named with "city" so everyone knows that it's ours & no one else's? if there was something that appears small-minded it's this.
i didn't come here to argue & waste time. i just want something i can be proud of that has something a little deeper then "twister" or prairie dogs. if people don't like 'tribe,' that's fine. i'd like people to argue reasons why they like or dislike a team name. i can't sit idle while people give lame reasons why "oklahoma" & "tribe are bad together. imo, there's no other professional team that has a more appropriate name that goes with the town or state's history more then tribe would go with oklahoma. it would be framed around all oklahomans, not just native americans.
the real problem for 'tribe' is that there are many oklahomans that don't like anything associated or even attributed to something that reminds people of oklahoma's past when associated to anything remotely related to 'indian territory.' it's a shame tribe was even used to describe the pact made in oklahoma. i guess everyone would be okay with the name 'Oklahoma Tribe' if they would of referenced that pact as 5-civilized gangs. tribe is appropriate for that reason though. it is our past but it also means more then one particular people. i thought our state was becoming more inclusive, but it seems we worry more in the present, think of no future, & forget the past.
btw, sroberts24's suggestion of thunder is not bad for weather-related name.
i guess i need to pay more attention to the nba naming thread. arguing about "City" is dead i guess.
