Thread: New comedy centering around Oklahoma City slated to air on Bravo

Honey Boo Boo is the perfect example of what most people probably associate with the term "white trash". The people in the Bravo clip bore absolutely ZERO resemblance to this characterization. Describing them as such only serves to confuse people who never saw the clip. The people in the clip were being portrayed as idle rich, new-money types.

You both seem to be under the incorrect impression I mean "trailer trash" when I say "white trash". Please be assured I do not.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_trash

"The label signifies lower social class and degraded standards of living." If you think the people shown have high standards, then I guess we have different definitions on more than the term white trash.

"In common usage, "White trash" overlaps in meaning with "cracker" (regarding Georgia and Florida), "hillbilly" (regarding Appalachia), "Okie" (regarding Oklahoma origins), and "redneck". The main difference is that "redneck," "cracker", "Okie", and "hillbilly" emphasize that a person is poor and uneducated and comes from the backwoods with little awareness of the modern world, while "White trash" emphasizes the person's moral failings." If you think the people shown have high morals, then I guess we have different definitions on more than the terms white trash and standards.

"more money than sense, some entitled superiority, prone to histrionics," All attributed to Britney Spears. A person many have called white trash.

"And there is a third popular use of the term: to denigrate and punish the rich and famous when they act badly. Despite her millions, Paris Hilton can be called out for a “trashy” lifestyle, and George Clooney can tell us, in his self-mocking kind of way, that beneath a dapper exterior, he’s really just white trash. And, as comedian and actor Tom Arnold said of his marriage to comedian, actress, and sometime political aspirant Roseanne Barr, “We’re America’s worst nightmare—white trash with money!”"

Not sure if anyone else watches Below Deck Mediterranean on Bravo. While it plays to a fairly low denominator, my wife and I have come to appreciate it for what it is. And I'd say there are worse jobs than working on a luxury yacht off the coast of Greece.

Anyway, a few weeks ago the show featured several self-described "Oklahoma Millionaires." Oddly enough, these folks had earned their money in an industry other than oil and gas (defense contracting, if I recall correctly). These guests seemed like perfectly normal Oklahomans, even if they did take certain liberties in the yacht's hot tub. Liberties which I probably cannot detail here. My point, though, is we weren't at all surprised that the cast spent at least 5-10 minutes making fun of the state and making fun of the guests for being from the state. The material wasn't anything original.

I guess it comes with the territory when you are a small market with an aggressive Christian legislature, but I'm starting to tire of it. I noticed the same thing on TNT throughout the NBA playoffs. It would be nice if the media took us more seriously as a market.

Are racial slurs now acceptable posting material on this board?

Just curios from which high branch you are casting such judgements regarding persons whom I am 99% sure you don't know now, and never will.

Yes, you've well-established your issues with open discussion.

I agree with Urbanized, white trash was the last thing that came to mind when i saw the clip. Some of the people on the show are successful in their own right in OKC. While they may be over the top, I was expecting something far more stereotypical "Oklahoma". It just seems right in line with any of the other Real Housewives of _____.

They were filming at Pride yesterday on 39th. Very annoying. The bars on 39th street are already packed to capacity during Pride. Add to that a film crew in a crowded bar and the PA's hounding everyone in the bar to sign a waiver in case you were caught on camera in any of the shots and it was just too much!.
we went out back to the patio to avoid that mess but two of the Ladies kept coming back there as well totally wasted and annoying.

The new show seems to have a distinct lack of the woman who put on rubber gloves to smoke. As I've not seen this show, and nobody will ever will see the other, it's hard to say of course, but this one seems considerably better. Focus seems to be more "here are reasons why what you think you know of OKC aren't true" as opposed to "look, all your hicktown prejudices are right! Point and laugh at the rednecks!".

Sweet Home Oklahoma is beyond stupid. It's not even the right state in the song. Makes no sense. I have a feeling this show will be as stupid as the title.

Honestly this looks more like Duck Dynasty than a classic Bravo show.

Beauty and the Geek wasn't bad, had some redeeming value in that people appeared to learn how to be better socially (not sure if any of it stuck, though), instead of being screaming, flaming a**holes all the time.

30 Days was hosted by Morgan Spurlock where a person or group would spend 30 days immersing themselves in a particular lifestyle or environment with which they are unfamiliar (e.g., working for minimum wage, being in prison, a Christian living as a Muslim). It was tremendous show. Of course, most people who started the show based their opinions our of ignorance and were completely transformed by the experience. You can find old episodes online and I highly recommend it.

    Here's the Muslim episode:
