Thread: Braniff Building

  1. Default Re: Braniff Building

Meh. I appreciate that SR is doing the Braniff project right. I just don't think it benefits anything to keep dragging the debacle on, but I agree that at least the KerMac definitely would have been a great project along these very lines. That said, it gets under my skin when a select few posters known as the SandRidge trolls constantly opposition up, so likewise I think it helps if we move on as well..

Definitely a bummer they didn't keep the Robinson street wall. This also will throw into glaring light how BAD the Dowell building is. What an ugly building that swallowed up one of the coolest buildings downtown before Kerr McGee got hold of it.

one row of brick (maybe 12-15 feet wide) is now being installed on the east side north end of the building .... i will try to get a pic soon .... i wonder if it is going to "frame" the glass face

If you look on the renderings it shows the brick. on the East Facade.

    Yes, see brick detail below:

That just looks really odd. Is that what the final building is going to look like? With the brick front facing the street and the all glass on the side? I just thought the transparent side was more of a cut away and it would be brick too???

No. That's glass and that's the awesome facade that's replacing a former blank brick facade devoid of any architectural features, or any features at all really. Much better than before, especially since the block doesn't have the density anymore to hide the back of the Braniff Building well...

I think it's going to be a great blended look. Can't wait to see it in person.

But there isn't any blending at all...absolutely horrid idea...not against incorporating modern with traditional, it can be done well...but this isn't it.

I like it too. The juxtaposition of old and new creates a feeling of surprise. There will be nothing bland or boring about that building because of the design.

I think it is like a museum cut away-I look into an old building. Seemingly perfect on the Front, but so exposed on the back.

    Sorta like a hospital gown.

I'm sure the glass won't be nearly as transparent as shown in the rendering; it never is.

Whenever I see renderings of the back side it reminds me of Tulsa's City Hall (One Technology Center). I agree with Pete that buildings almost never retain in reality the transparency indicated in drawings, but Tulsa's building comes closer than most.

I agree, it is a surprise all right...like, "where is the rest of the building?"

I don't know...even during the day I like the translucent quality of the glass on that building. It looks considerably different than most glass curtain wall construction, which is usually so reflective.

I hope the Braniff facade is similar to that...

I know on the Tulsa City Hall it's only that clear on the east side no doubt due to the lack of direct sunlight except for in the morning. The glass facade on the Braniff building will be both east and south; I don't think they could use that type of glass for a southern exposure.

What is going to be on the upper floors of the building (beyond the street level)? If it's offices, I can't immagine they will use clear glass like the Tulsa City Hall. To keep from roasting, I have to pull my office blinds down in the afternoon, and I have black tinted windows. Even if a more insulating glass is used, there are still the issues of privacy and minimizing glare on a computer screen.

The midday sun is far more bearable than the afternoon sun. The glass curtainwall is on the east face of the building and a minimal south facing wall.

The thing with the Tulsa City Hall is... the clear glass is not into any offices. The clear glass on the east side is actually into an "atrium" of sorts that has another glass wall separating it from the occupied portion of the building. It is called a "solar well". It serves as a thermal buffer for the office space during the morning heat gain period. It is a natural ventilation shaft for fair weather days. This is the part of the building that took huge damage in the big wind storm shortly after it was built.
