As a "Village Person" I hate to say that [they will fail] too.
But Cassady Square seems to be nearly as bad as West Memorial for killing restarants.
    (Think about Perri's Pizza for just a moment . . .)

I've been intending to try 1492 for a long time. I wonder if they will be open for a short while in the old Chinese place or the former Jimmy's Egg location. Perri's old spot is a bit small. With "challenging" parking.

A Tex-Mex restaurant chain plans to make its Oklahoma debut early next year in Tulsa.

    Austin, Texas-based Chuy's will open a location at 10808 E. 71st St. near U.S. 169.

"We're not the normal Tex-Mex restaurant with a cantina theme," said Hillary Delling, marketing manager for Chuy's. "We play rock 'n' roll music. We have crazy pictures on the wall. It's fun and family-friendly."

Company officials are hoping to open the restaurant as early as mid-February.

Chuy's will occupy the former site of New World Buffet, an Asian-theme restaurant that recently closed.

Delling said Chuy's is known for being a casual restaurant that serves huge portions for a low price. Most entree items are under $10, she said.

One of the popular menu items is called "Burrito as Big as Yo' Face."

"We like to size good portions at a phenomenal value," Delling said.

The restaurant is also known for its "Nacho Trunk," a nacho bar nested inside of an actual car trunk, as well as an "Elvis Shrine" at each location.

Chuy's will also have an outdoor patio.

The company started in Austin in 1982 as a former barbecue restaurant turned Tex-Mex chain. Through the 1990s it opened locations in Texas before spreading to the Southeast in recent years.

The Tulsa location will be the 32nd for the company.

Delling said the restaurant tries to incorporate a rock 'n' roll vibe to counter traditional old west Mexico themes at other restaurants.

"We had heard great things about Tulsa from our real estate people," Delling said. "I had heard that Tulsa had a little Austin feel. We went downtown and it was really rejuvenated."

The Tulsa restaurant will seat about 270 customers and employ 170 to 180 people. Hiring will take place about six weeks before it opens.

For those keeping score, another point for Tulsa over Okc. Tulsa continues to bring in the national/regional companies first and Okc is an afterthought.

Love this quote from the Chuy's marketing manager ....

Favorite Chuy's menu item: Southwestern Enchiladas. Homemade blue corn tortillas stacked with freshly-roasted, hand-pulled chicken, cheese & Green Chile sauce, topped with a fried egg. I usually substitute shredded brisket for the chicken. Think...a Denko's Darlin' gone to Santa Fe.

BTW, is Denko's still open? I've been out of the OKC area for 25 yrs.

Closed long, long ago. There have been places open claiming to want to bring back the Darlin' but they weren't authentic and didn't last long..

Of course, one would have to care whether Chuy's chooses to come to OKC or not. It's just another chain and I care not whether we ever get a Chuy's. There are plenty of better local Mexican restaurants here that I would rather frequent.

The only store I wish we had that Tulsa has is Restoration Hardware. I'm hoping Aubrey has them lined up for that empty space in the Triangle. Anthro only went to Tulsa first because there wasn't a space they wanted in OKC; they were more interested in OKC. Apple came here first. Who cares really? There are a few national stores I'd like to have and after that, I'd rather shop in my local stores.

Local is always better when it comes to restaurants IMO.

It is interesting how many Texas restaurants are opening up locations in Tulsa: Mi Cocina, La Madeleine, and Chuy's. I do like La Madeleine's breakfast and would go there every once in awhile. The others? I'll stick to the much better local places in Tulsa (and OKC).

Chuy's is presently hiring in Norman (up to 150 slots) and I think they are shooting for open later this month. Not certain on opening time frame, but I noticed some now hiring signs yesterday when I gave a chap a ride downtown.

They had a special Redfish Rally opening party about a month ago, but it was just in tents in their parking lot and they only had chips and stuff like that. That could be what your friend heard about. They open this month!

In my experience the Mi Cocina in HPV is much better than the Chuy's on Knox, although I prefer the urban vibe of that particular Chuy's if we're just evaluating the locations - I've heard other Mi Cocina locations aren't as good as the original, and that Chuy's tends to be a lot more consistent.

Have to agree: Mi Cocina is very good Tex-Mex. Chuy's isn't as good.

We had the misfortune to try Chuy's in Norman today . We will never go back. That is some of the worst food we've ever had. The wait person "tried," and that's the nicest thing we can say about the experience. I would give this restaurant an "F" grade on all aspects--except the service; she really did try. Chuy's makes Taco Bell seem "good"--and it is awful, but not like Chuy's. Ugh.

I thought Chuy's was really good........in 1995. Seriously, it's pretty sad for Tex-Mex. That said, it still is better than most Okie-Mex joints.

I was at Chuy's a few weeks ago with some friends and we all had a great meal. I will definitely go back!
