Well, I just saw this thread, and thought I'd chime in, although some people will probably hate my input (or ignore it completely).
I just sat down this afternoon to check out OKC Talk with an Orval. Darn tasty, and highly available over here in Belgium. Saw a post somewhere else on the board today about the Trappist Beer known as Westvleteren... might have to take a drive out to the Northwestern part of Belgium, visit the Abbey and see what the fuss is all about.
I have developed an affection for a German Beer named Erdinger while living over here... it's probably my current favorite, as it rings in at just under 6% alcohol; I am not real keen on the 12% beers that are usual big deals around here.
The Belgian cheap beer in this area is called Jupiler... and the 'quality' shows. Every country has their own version of Natty Light...
Even though there is a huge selection here, I am sure that I have barely scratched the surface. My understanding is that there are about 800 different types/brands of beer brewed here in Belgium... but I have tried many local beers that were just slightly better than average, and have even run into some that are way less than impressive (I had a beer with a 'hint' of a chocolate flavor in Brussels known as Phantom that was a real struggle to finish).
Based on the overall quality of the beers I have been able to sample here, it will probably take a few months back in the States until I will be capable of tasting a Bud or Coors Light again... but I will certainly enjoy coming back home!
