Maybe, just maybe, we'll get lucky and when the 63rd St. location closes, they'll boot the cooks from the Midtown one and give their job to the ones from 63rd.

The burger competition in the area is just rediculous. Just within a mile or two is Tuckers, S&B, Lipsmackers, Pops, Garage, Republic, and now Hopdoddy. Irmas had do be struggling to keep up, and frankly I would put their burgers at the bottom of that list.

The 63rd st location used to be a really good bbq joint. Wish a new great non-chain bbq restaurant would go in there now. Earls is just up the street and does pretty welll... but its bbq is mediocre and they are ripe to be pilaged by a new joint.

Not only is it comical that you included Pops in that list, but to say that they are even better than Irmas is truly incredible. Thank you for that chuckle. Needed it after the England loss.

Yeah, that was an oversight... but not by much. Neither are really good burgers. I do still go to Irmas for their fried pickles though. And Pops occasionally for their 1/2 price night on Tuesdays.

Rib Crib really good BBQ? ..... Ok, I'll give you good but if you had said great we'd have an issue.

A co-worker and I did put a hurt on that Rib Crib's profit margin on AYCE rib night a few times.

Not Rib Crib. This was before there was a Rib Crib (which was actually a pizza company at the time, I think). The Rib Crib was at Britton and May if I remember correctly. The owner of this BBQ spot moved to Pink and closed up here. Pink was closer to where he went fishing. He was a persnikity man who made BBQ right and if you didn't like it you could leave. He might not open up if it was a good fishing day. He always ran out of ribs but made maybe the best steak in town. Oh...the good ole days.

I worked at OKlahoma Monthly Magazine at the time and we ran a "10 Best BBQ Joints In OK" cover feature every year. I was a sidekick to the writer for this article.
This one was always on it.

So back around statehood? I wonder if it was the guy that had the BBQ shack out near Thunderbird in a red shed?

We mowed a lot of yards in that area when I was a kid but I really don't remember what else was in that building before Rib Crib's stint in it in the late 90's early aughts.

This was late 70s, early 80s. Sorry, I've slept a couple of times and can't remember his name. Sure do remember the ribs though. Faces and names come and go... good BBQ is remembered forever.

Irma's twitter account just said the Midtown location is closing as well in a response to Steve Lackmeyer.

Man, that totally sucks now. In addition to their burgers being great, their onion rings are the best around, like Johnnie's used to be decades ago, and their bacon was better than anybody else - crispy and chewy and thick in all the right proportions, best theta sauce too. Guess it's gonna be S&B from now on, until I try Nic's and Lip Smackers to see where they stand.

Oh well, they had a good run, guess they got tired of the fight....

Beasly's Barbecue, excellent chopped beef sandwiches and ribs and he was the only place in town that ran out of food and shut the doors. He moved to Pink for a few years then came back and opened a new barbecue place where the Shack is located. He did a lot of the construction himself. He was open six months then cancer got him. He was a cleanliness freak although looking at the gunny sack curtains and all of the junk hanging on the walls you would never know it but he never was hit by the health inspections and they specifically mentioned how fanatical he was about keeping it clean in an article in the Daily Oklahoman. His sauce was really good and is right up there with Leo's, Han's, and Pulliam's, the one that was in his garage with chairs around the walls and newspaper for tablecloths.

Beasly's opened sometime in the 70's. I discovered it in 1973 and it was one of my favorites.

Thanks. That was it. He had some of the hottest spice ever. And if you ever asked for a steak more well done than medium rare he was all in your face. Lol.

That would explain why I don't remember it... Didn't move here until 78.

i'm gonna miss irma's... there are plenty of good burger options in okc but if i had to pick a 'favorite' it'd be them.

i have no actual proof, but i also have to think that the owners have other plans for this piece of real estate and so the building on western isn't long for this world... that place has a ton of character and it will probably be replaced by some cookie cutter structure.

Agree, they're our favorites, just something about the atmosphere.

I'd imagine that since Bank7 owns the land, and since someone said they're expanding, they'll tear it down (along with that little retail strip) for parking or another office building.

    Rover,
He offered mild, medium, and hot. That was on the menu, but he had extra hot if you asked for it (and I did). I usually bought two chopped (real chopped with chunks of brisket, not ground or chopped into tiny bits of meat) beef sandwiches, one hot and one extra hot. That was in case his extra hot was hotter than normal (yes, it varied) and I had a hot sandwich to chase it with. All of his sauces had great flavor. I didn't normally use it on the ribs but I loved it on the sandwiches. His name was Ken Beasley (Just noticed his name is spelled Beasley) and his uncle was Jack Beasley who was a well known radio dj and executive. He dj'd on KLPR and a few others. Some of the folks in my age range should remember him.

I remember taking one of my macho friends to Beasley and he insisted Ken's hot wasn't all that hot. Ken reappeared with his "special" hot sauce for him. My friend litterally left with tears running down his cheeks. LOL.

Thanks for leading me down memory lane.

FYI, the Midtown location is only open for lunch, 11-3 Monday to Saturday. Went this evening with some friends and it was closed.

Yeah, same here. After navigating the maze of torn up streets to get there, we walk up only to realize it was no longer open for dinner. We gave up and headed to a place closer to home.

Man this sucks, Irma's was our favorite when we lived there, and Minneapolis sucks for burgers.

Last day for Irma's on 63rd is Aug 15. The old Hideaway would make a nice place for them to go into (probably too big, though)...
